20 km/s is something like 65,000 ft / s
That would definitely leave a mark.

They are lucky it was that high up. If 500kt went off at say 5000 feet the city would’ve been leveled.
To: Ernest_at_the_Beach
well the say it came in at 20k/s, so it was for sure way ahead of the shockwave...

iirc there should be a sonic boom for every multiple of the sound barrier

NASA is saying more like 7000-10,000 tons. A 15 meter diameter sphere of iron would weight about 14,000 tons, of water like 1,700 tons (displacement of WW-II destroyer). A one ton sphere of iron would be about 1.3 m (four feet) across.

From the article...
...and unlike meteorite showers they can be dangerous, scientists explained.
No kidding!

Think of the benefit to the world if it had exploded above Mecca.
The world could also consider itself lucky that the meteor didn't go over Mecca and destroy it. The Muslims all over the world would have immediately blamed it on Israel and the U.S., and wWIII cold have broken out. Jumping to conclusions would have been first, and investigations would have come after war had already broken out.

NASA is saying more like 7000-10,000 tons. I have seen this estimate also; what I don't understand is where are the big pieces and big craters. Yes, the outer portion can vaporize, but the inner cores of the pieces are still going to be not much above absolute zero. Is that idea that the whole thing detonated into dust and a few pieces of pea gravel that ended up in the lake or somewhere?

How much global warming can we expect from this extraterrestrial event? Well, considering this was punishment from Gaia for not fully acknowledging man-caused global warming and failing to stop all carbon commerce to appease her, I'd say the answer to the question is unknown.

A Russian policeman works near an ice hole, I "googled" that image and all I can get is Putin standing by Ozero.

The pieces end up at terminal velocity and just sort of go kerplunk, without a crater.
I suspect they’re not looking far enough down the track. Also it’s a heavily forested area, and a lot of snow as well.

Many explosions heard after the initial one.....These have to be sonic booms from the various fragments.

Thanks. Exploding fireball reported over/near Cuba also, in case you hadn’t seen the reports.
