Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said he would strive to be like Lyndon Johnson, the Democrat famous for expanding the U.S. welfare state through the "Great Society," if he were elected president.
According to the Miami Herald, Bush made those comments Wednesday night in San Antonio, Florida at Saint Leo University, while speaking about education, immigration, and energy policy.
Bush did not address Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty programs, about which Ronald Reagan once famously quipped, "We had a war on poverty, and poverty won."
Instead, he was referencing Johnson's mastery of the so-called sausage-making process in Congress.
He vowed to approach the presidency as "master of the Senate," as biographer Robert Caro described Johnson.
He went and he cajoled, he begged, he threatened, he loved, he hugged, he did what leaders do, which is they personally get engaged to make something happen, Bush said of Johnson. Bush cited Caro's latest book about Johnson, The Passage of Power, which covers the first part of Johnson's presidency.

Somebody buy him a Lil President playset and maybe he’ll leave us alone.
2016 is not something to look forward to.
This is why a Republican won’t be seeing the inside of the Oval Office for a long time.
Get a real job, Jeb. Of the countless things this country needs, another LBJ is definitely not one of them.
I am starting to guess Sarah Palin is on the sidelines deciding whether to run as an independent or not.
Guessing at the moment, she is tending toward the independent, more than the not, at this point.
Tea Party 2016.
It helps when you have a solid obedient majority in both houses. Johnson didn't do it alone. Jebbie is a naive fool.
Reason #1 to throw that schmuck into a bottomless, based upon the TRILLIONS of damage and societal horror LBJ inflicted on America, and still continues to be felt, today
MOD: Can you edit my title please I messed it up a bit
Like I needed another reason not to vote for this guy
Actually, instead of putting a "J" at the beginning, putting another "b" at the end would be nice: "ebb" Bush. Has a certain lovely ring to it...
Screw all RINOs.
Jen is slime.
Only a Bush could think of Lyndon Johnson in a good light.
One of the worst Presidents ever, and a horrible person to boot.
What a d#ckhead!
Two Bushes were enough.
Oops, that’s “Jeb is slime.”
Will govern like this:
Guessing at the moment, she is tending toward the independent, more than the not, at this point.
Tea Party 2016.
If about 15-30% of the sitting Congressmen would agree to switch to the new party then the old GOP could be supplanted like the Wigs were supplanted. But Id hate to have a real conservative doing a Ralph Nader or Ross Perot on us thus leaving a clear field for Hillary, or, God-forbid, Joe Biden. I tend to believe that Sarah would not do that to the country.
I know many people sat out the last election because Mitt was a socialist. But at least he was an American socialist. I held my nose and filled in the circle next to his name.
So good old Jeb says he would govern like LBJ. Has he not noticed that we already have another dictator in the White House? Or does he mean he would also govern from a toilet seat?
The establishment GOP still do not get it.
Good Gravy; this Bushie has lost his marbles.
In my lifetime the presidents I’ve despised, or cared little for are:
1. The current occupier of the White Hut (Most evil of all)
2. The co-presidents Klinton (Second and third most evil)
3. Jimmy (the geek) Carter (Most stupid)
4. Lyndon Bird (Most lecherous and founder of Great Society)
5. Gerald (What can be said)
6. Nixon (Had a mental problem)
7. Kennedy (Had a serious sex problem that may have gotten him killed and besides I detested his entire family. Even Macaroni.)
8. FDR (Who volunteered, I wonder, to push his wheelchair up the ramp to hell?)
9. Woodrow Wilson (Princeton was poor training for this egghead with a vision towards world government and, of course, responsibility for the income tax and shoving us into Europe’s conflict.)
In this century the most admirable, or least detested presidents were:
1. Ronald Wilson Reagan
2. Dwight David Eisenhower (My commander-in-chief)
3. Harry S (for nothing) Truman (whose main fault was that he’d never admit having an administration that had far too many communists poluting it.)
4. Calvin Coolidge (A much forgotten great president)
Ironically, America’s greatest president was its FIRST PRESIDENT!
Now wonder the left loves eb Bush!!!!
That settles it for me. He ain’t “Mah fello’ Amurican.”
Yup, the Bushes just don’t get it. Who needs another government program (”Great Society” in this case) that only weakens our nation and our economy?
I’m bookmarking this for friends of mine who think that anything with an “R” after its name is wonderful, and who get ticked off with me for criticizing liberal GOP-E traitors.
Oops. Forgot Bush’s brother. I’d just as soon forget him. Even his name escapes me now.
Oh. I do have something good to say about W: he wasn’t Bronco Bama.
Jeb Bush will be pushed down our throats in the very same manner that Romney, McCain and Dole were, with the very same disastrous results.
“It’s his turn” will be the mantra of the RINO Brigade.
Time to nip this in the bud is NOW.
Harding was my favorite
LBJ was a corrupt gangster.
Yes, he was. He was a ruthless, nasty SOB.
Jeb could always run as a Democrat. He would fit right in.
Jeb sets his sights low enough so he wouldn’t have to work up a sweat to meet his objective.
In my book LBJ is one of the absolute worst presidents ever.
In terms of damage done to the USA and American citizens he is one of 3 worse, right along with Lincoln and FDR.
I held my nose for Mitt, but I'm done. If it's Jeb or Christie vs a muzzie cleric or Eric Holder himself I will still vote 3rd party. I will never vote for a RINO again.
The GOP had better get wise and get on board with the Tea Party or get left behind.
LOL I will! I will!
I’m encouraging Tea Party minded people to look long and hard at Calvin Coolidge and adopt him as our political “patron Saint”.
Lincoln easily #1, 700,000 dead American’s. Wouldn’t find a peaceful way to resolve conflict.
But public schools and so called scholars consider him the greatest ever president. Mainly because he ruled like a dictator.
LIke a lot of VN Vets...I traveled a long way to pee on LBJ’s grave in Johnston TX.
His list of dubious achievements is long and sordid. His wife wasn’t any better.
May they continue to rot in hell..where all lying, cheating, thieving politicians go.
If conservatives don’t get pro active within the party we most certainly will end up with another RINO. Now is the time to join your local Republican party and start taking it back from the GOPe.
And
He vowed to approach the presidency as "master of the Senate,"
Is Jeb angling to take Biden's job? Reads as if Zero's insurance policy is being cancelled.
I certainly won't be doing that for "ebb".
A lot of people are giving up on the party. I don’t blame them but they need to stick with it and take it over at the state and county level and produce real leaders.
I could be wrong, but I think Jeb is telling y’all why he will not run; you will not like it, so whoever is pestering him to run can stop.
I do not think he is offering to run like LBJ.
The very idea of Jeb Bush in that office is obscene.
Still waiting for the photo of the hayseed from Green Acres...
There is a reason Reagan idolized Coolidge. The man made guys like Washington and Jefferson look like comparatively big spenders.
Just how old are you if Wilson and FDR are among the Presidents in your lifetime? Are you over 100?
