Whitey trial made for TV
By Howie Carr / Boston Herald

Feb 15, 2013

You talk about pay-per-view. I wouldn’t pay a nickel to see one of those crappy wrestling events, let alone $49.95, but who wouldn’t pay to watch Whitey take the stand?

The rule is, federal trials aren’t supposed to be televised. Heck, at the federal courthouse, the marshals even take your cellphones away at the metal detector. But you know, rules are made to be broken.

The trial is going to be up on the seventh floor, Courtroom 21. I plan to have a seat. I am, after all, a victim, threatened repeatedly by the serial killer and his knuckle-
dragging plug-uglies. Just ask that tongue-tied tub o’ lard Kevin Weeks. Didn’t he write in a “book” that they were going to blow me up with a basketball, or shoot me through a stone wall, or something?

It was on “60 Minutes,” and we all know how truthful that fake-but-accurate show is.

Anyway, I’m a survivor. But I also have two jobs. I’m going to have to leave the Moakley Courthouse every day about 1 to get to my other job, in Brighton. But why should I have to miss a minute? Why should you have to miss a minute?

We taxpayers are paying for the prosecution, and for Whitey’s lawyers, too. The least they can give us is a crummy TV show.

They plan to have closed-circuit TV coverage piped into a second room at the courthouse, but that room will be jammed too, especially when Sal Mineo’s dear friend raises his right hand and then starts spouting ragtime.

How is Jay Carney going to ask these cockamamie questions? He should be wearing a clown nose, or at least some Groucho glasses and moustache.

Glenn Beck now has his own channel on Dish TV. Who do you think would give you better value for your entertainment dollar next summer, Glenn Beck or Whitey Bulger?

Doesn’t Catherine Greig deserve a chance to see her boytoy one more time, even if it’s just on the tube? This is the guy she played doctor with all those years in Santa Monica. She loved Whitey even more than her husband, both of whose brothers Whitey murdered.

Put the trial on the radio too, for people in their cars. The options are practically limitless — satellite, or WiFi, or you could do it the easy way, on regular boring terrestrial radio.

Give the U.S. District Court the old Rush Radio 1200. Right now they’re broadcasting “comedy,” but what could be funnier than Whitey’s claim that the government gave him immunity up to and including murder, but he wasn’t an informant, period?

Whitey, as your brother used to say at the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast: Keep your arms out, it’ll make it harder for them to throw a net over you.

Whitey’s trial on the tube. Catch it on WBTV.

THE HOWIE 'N' JOE SHOW

PAGE WITH VIDEO

>>The Howie ’n’ Joe show February 15, 2013 PrintEmail 1 Comment By Herald Staff / Boston Herald @bostonherald View My Profile 0 0 googleplus0 reddit1 Thousands of viewers joined in the Herald’s new “High Noon” live webcast yesterday where columnist Howie Carr offered his views on everything from Scott Brown’s future as a TV news pundit to the ongoing James “Whitey” Bulger saga. Carr said he thought Brown, the former GOP senator, made a smart move in joining Fox News as a commentator — though it doesn’t help his political future in Massachusetts. Carr and “High Noon” host and Herald columnist Joe Battenfeld also took questions from viewers in a live Web chat where the hot topics included the city of Boston’s dismal job in snow removal and the increasingly crowded U.S. Senate special election. The webcast is streamed live at noon every Thursday, and Herald readers can also view it any time on bostonherald.com.

Pension pitch; drop the mike!
Feb 17, 2013

By Howie Carr / Boston Herald

Memo to the Chelsea Retirement Board: Don’t even think about it.

Don’t even consider giving the about-to-plead-guilty-to-felonies Mike McLaughlin a pension. He shouldn’t get even a “reduced” one of $128,000 or so that he would have been eligible for if he’d played by the rules, as impossible as that would be for the lifelong payroll patriot.

This may seem like a scenario not even worth discussing. But we are, after all, talking about Chelsea, Damascus on the Mystic. This is a city where McLaughlin, as head of the Chelsea Housing Authority, was for years able to pay himself an annual salary as high as $360,000 while telling his board that he was actually making $164,000.

Nobody ever checked.

He was setting himself up for a pension of $278,000 — $80,000 more than Billy Bulger. He wanted to be a Bulger and now McLaughlin gets his wish, only instead of Billy, he’s Whitey, spending his golden years in the can.

According to state law, you forfeit your pension if you commit a crime while in the execution of your duties. And since McLaughlin claimed the hundreds of thousands in extra dough while filling out the forms required by the state and federal agencies that were keeping his bust-out agency afloat, it seems like a no-brainer.

But I repeat, this is Chelsea. Rest assured that the Chelsea Retirement Board is composed of the same high-class caliber of citizens as the former members of the Chelsea Housing Authority.

Why do you think McLaughlin, who has worked in the hackerama his entire life, decided to let the Chelsea Housing Authority control his pension? For the same reason John Buonomo, another graduate of the crime school known as Middlesex County, was relying on the Somerville Retirement Board to do the right thing by him.

This of course was before Buonomo was caught on a state police camera breaking into the copy machines at the Southern Middlesex Registry of Deeds.

The State Retirement Board? That’s run by the treasurer, who’s always running for governor, whoever he or she is. They have to worry about bad PR. The Chelsea and Somerville Retirement Boards, not so much.

Fear not, however, there is a silver lining in all this for McLaughlin. He’ll get a full refund of all the money he paid into all of the various public retirement systems he was a part of, minus interest. That’s what they did for Sal DiMasi, the crooked House speaker, after he lost his pension. Naturally, Sal didn’t have to repay any of the pension money he’d received before he was caught with his hand in the till.

This is Massachusetts, after all. Nothing on the level. …

Sometimes, these brazen, sticky-fingered thieves try to get their kiss in the mail back even after they’ve been convicted. Take the third of the brothers Bulger, Jackie, the runt of the litter. After a nationwide search, he became clerk of what was then called the Boston Juvenile Court. He was convicted of lying to a federal grand jury about one of Whitey’s safe-deposit boxes and stripped of his state pension.

Jailbird Jackie appealed. He acknowledged committing a crime in the federal judicial system. But, he argued, he worked in the state judicial system. Therefore, his courthouse crime had nothing to do with his courthouse job.

Are you following me here?

Believe me, if Jackie could have, he’d have thrown himself on the tender mercies of the Boston Retirement Board. Louise Day Hicks used to run that, with assistance from one of Kevin White’s dimmest ward bosses.

In those days, many city retirees insisted on picking up their checks in person at City Hall. Receiving one’s check by mail was far too risky — each letter represented one more potential count of mail fraud, at five years per.

Poor Mike McLaughlin. He tried to out-Bulger Bulger, and instead he ends up another John Buonomo, a guy he regarded with contempt, except McLaughlin is going to Club Fed instead of the Billerica House of Correction.

But things could be worse, Mike. You could be Lt. Gov. Tim “Crash” Murray.

I did an interview at the glob in 2002 or 2003 when we were doing a lot of FReeps in Boston, I forget the date.

The reporters were a bunch of condencending aholes, the enlisted scum, guards and working people thought we were great. Winship dropped by, the reason my Uncle was not a reporter at the glob.

Globies: Time to get hands dirty

by Howie Carr

column link

I have next to nothing in common with the pampered pukes of Morrissey Boulevard — I went to a state college, I’m not in the Social Register, I don’t have a trust fund, I wasn’t born and raised on Park Avenue, I never summered in the Hamptons.

Still, I feel sorry for the bow-tied bumkissers. The worst thing about their impending journey to the “slaughterhouse” is that most of them are helpless like a rich man’s child, to quote Bob Dylan. After college, Mumsy or Pater just made one telephone call to dear cousin Pinch, and suddenly they were writing puff pieces on Barney Frank.

They’d finally found a simpatico mini-People’s Republic where everyone could address one another as “Comrade” while owning a summer cottage in Provincetown. But now political correctness is trumped by a brutally bad economy, presided over by the incompetent Harvard hacks the Globe has been shamelessly touting for decades. How ironic — their candidates won, and now they’re losing … their jobs.

It would take a heart of stone not to laugh.

Comrades, it’s time to look for a real job. Here are a few tips:

Lose the bow tie, ditto the ascot.

When applying for any newspaper (or PR) job, it’s important to include clippings with up-to-date headlines like “Gas prices rise 20 cents in week.” Oh, sorry, I forgot, the Globe doesn’t run stories about rising gas prices. It might reflect poorly on Dear Leader.

Never confide to a prospective employer that you crib some of your best stuff from Todd Domke’s column on wbur.org.

Don’t bother calling cousin John Forbes Kerry about a job. He’s already hired a former Globe “reporter.” Or should I say that for the first time Liveshot is paying a Globe rumpswab to flack for him, instead of the way they’ve traditionally done it, for free.

If you decide to include in your clippings a story about Elizabeth Warren, make sure it includes the de rigueur references to her early life on “the jagged edge of the middle class,” her parents’ “elopement” and of course the Globe’s favorite fable, that “if elected, she would become the first Native-American woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate.”

When they ask you about Scott Brown, angrily spit out that he’s a “phony.” (Unlike, say, the first Native-American woman ever elected to the U.S. Senate.)

If someone in HR asks you what you learned at the Globe, tell them the truth: “There is no such thing as a bad illegal alien or a good straight white male.”

I read in your rag yesterday that the Times has no plans to “ruin” the Globe. Even a Globe reporter can figure out what that means. Good luck, comrades. You’ll need it.

Oh, that's why Howie was doing the Death Pool this afternoon... C. Everett Koop. I was trying to remember what prominent person died recently. Thanks...

Thank goodness Howie is back! Last week was unbearable with McScreamer filling in. (Only heard about 5 seconds of McScreamer per day last week... that was enough, obviously)

WHY does Howie torture his valued listeners with McScreamer? What ever happened to Col. Hunt as Howie's regular sub?

Watch your wallet, Obama
and his cronies are at it again

by Howie Carr

Watch your wallet, Obama
& Co. are at it again

I think I’ve seen this “Sequester” movie before. Only it had a different title — it was called “Prop 2 1/2 Override.”

Obama and his common nightwalkers in the media are trotting out the exact same scare tactics that the local teachers’ unions and assorted municipal layabouts have been employing to frighten the bejesus out of taxpayers around here for decades.

It happens every spring. The schools need more money. The voters yawn. The school superintendent ups the ante and says, well, if you don’t give us the extra money then the first thing we’ll have to cut is the high school football team. Followed by the band. Not the third assistant associate deputy senior school superintendent making $120,000, but the football team.

Then the selectmen threaten to close a fire station. Or lay off cops. The town dump? No longer open on weekends.

The problem for the hacks is, this shakedown may work the first time, maybe even the second. But as Barack Obama is now complaining privately, eventually the law of diminishing returns sets in. Before he embarked on this latest the-sky-is-falling campaign, perhaps Barack should have consulted with the little boy who cried wolf.

Here’s how absurd these scare tactics are. Over the weekend the semi-official Associated Press breathlessly reported in a story on the National Park Service: “3,500 volunteers who provide 40,000 hours on resource management duties would be eliminated.”

They’re eliminating … volunteers? How does this save money?

Listen, everybody who’s on a payroll took a 2 percent pay cut Jan. 1 when the Social Security taxes went back up.

Learn to live with it, the peons in the Dreaded Private Sector were told. Two percent — big deal. But when the privileged class — the government — takes a 2 percent “cut,” which isn’t really a cut, it’s “draconian.”

Do you remember any sob stories about the terrible suffering of Josh and Mindy, the $1 million-a-year Yuppies? Imagine if they had been interviewed, and had told the reporter that because of their approximate 5 percent Barack pay cut, their kids were going to have to drop out of college, the bank was going to foreclose on their house, the repo man was coming for the BMW, etc.

Readers would have laughed. But we’re supposed to tremble with fear when Barack uses the same scare tactics.

Barack is now reduced to saying that the draconian cuts may not show up immediately, which means, they won’t show up, period. Because they aren’t really going to happen.

The sky is falling! The sky is falling!

And one last Howie column for the month...

Carr: Instead of rail, make tracks to N.H.
by Howie Carr Thursday, February 28, 2013

If you absolutely, positively had to get somewhere by a certain time, who would you trust more to get you there?

Fung Wah Bus or Gov. Deval Patrick?

Say what you will about Fung Wah, it’s Dreaded Private Sector, not some spoiled hack who’s had everything in his life handed to him.

And a trip on Fung Wah costs 15 bucks. Does anyone doubt that Deval’s preposterous Fall River-to-Boston high-speed rail will come in for less than $2 billion?

Which is why I suspect that Deval is going to have a problem putting across his “legacy” plan to become America’s next railroad baron. The headline on his new website is “Choosing Growth in Our Communities.”

Surely he meant to say, “Choosing Taxes in Our Communities.”

Not that Deval has an inflated opinion of his own proposed boondoggle.

“When we decided settling the west was important, we built the transcontinental railroad.”

He’s comparing the Pittsfield-to-New York line to the transcontinental railroad? At least he got the name right, though. His very brilliant mentor, Barack Obama, has been known to refer to the “intercontinental railroad.” Isn’t a Harvard education great?

“Earlier this year, the lieutenant governor and I laid out a plan to prepare for a better future.”

Nice to include Crash Murray in there. Of course the only plan Tiny Tim is laying out right now is one to avoid going to Club Fed, once his dear friend, convicted felon Mike McLaughlin, begins singing to the grand jury.

“Many people ask, how will this plan help me?”

It helps you if you think you have too much money. Because once Deval starts taking care of the don’t-kill-the-job trade unions growing rich off their Davis-Bacon so-called prevailing wages on these never-to-be-completed rail projects, your wallet will be lighter. A lot lighter.

Why do we need better public transportation, Deval?

“Police and firefighters need it to get to emergencies.”

Police and other first responders riding to 911 calls on the T? If that’s the future in Massachusetts, my suggestion is, buy a gun. And a fire extinguisher.

It won’t cost much, of course. The income tax will “only” go up from 5.25 percent to 6.25 percent. Maybe that’s the real legacy Deval’s looking for — to beggar working people by jacking up the income tax rate to Dukakis-era levels.

What I don’t understand is, if these new railroads are such a good “investment in the future,” why don’t we let private companies bid on them, like we’re doing with casinos? Surely they’ll see what a gold mine it will be, running empty trains back and forth from Boston to Bristol County.

Hey, Deval, you want to improve transportation in this state? I’ll tell you what we really need. Six-lane highways north, to New Hampshire, so we can get the hell out of this state, first for tax-free shopping, and finally, forever.

In the meantime, Fung Wah forever!

Tonight just past midnight the former Rush Radio/Talk 1200,
which yukked it up for the past 7 months as a comedy outlet, switches to Bloomberg Business Radio. It’s what they call
an LMA I believe—limited marketing agreement. Clear Channel
owns em, leases the station to Bloomberg.

http://bostonherald.com/business/media_marketing/2013/02/wrko_s_armstrong_welcomes_competition_from_bloomberg_radio

>> ““A lot of people say, ‘Who wants to be highly ranked among 55-year-old men?’ You know what, 55-year-old men and women have all the wealth in this country and we do really well there,” he said.

(Article mentioned Al Mayers—not sure but I think he used to be prog dir of WRKO way back, and he had an assistant named Kevin Straley. Howie would refer to them on air and he called Kevin “Little Al” as in the apparent nickname for race car driver Al Unser Jr.)

LOL! Loved the Fung Wah discussion on Howie's show yesterday... harrowing tales!

We see those Fung Wah buses careening up and down the Mass. Turnpike (and occasionally on highways in CT) all the time. We do our best to stay far away from 'em... ;-)
