A series of explosions in the skies of Russia’s Urals region, reportedly caused by a meteorite shower, has sparked panic in three major cities. Witnesses said that houses shuddered, windows were blown out and cellphones have stopped working.

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

I thought that too, but the story is that this one came from the opposite direction.

From your link regarding auto dash cam videos:

” It can be jarring to watch these videos, but they get plenty of hits.”

Reminds me of the times FoxNews used to break in with News Alerts for freeway chases. Those would gain thousands of viewers in a short time.

Then, others started complaining because some of those car chases didn’t end too nicely. So, FoxNews quit showing the chases.

Can you imagine the conversation with your insurance agent?!?! “Is that collision or comprehensive? Am I even covered for a part of an airplane hitting my car while driving?” How about meteorites? I will have to re-read my auto policy!

Yikes. Remarkable videos and photos.

I’ll bet that incident caused a few changes of underwear in Chelyabinsk.

All kidding aside, glad to see that no one was killed, at least thus far, though injuries have been reported.

I don’t think it exploded or hit the ground — it looks like it entered the atmosphere and left it again — in an almost straight line. I’ll bet it was big, too. Perhaps ten meters in diameter.

Then you didn't see the correct video, there are several out there. I saw one that showed the meteor comming down, you could actually see the meteor for a few seconds on the video and it wasn't headed back out into space, besides it was way to close for that type of action. Not only that there is a picture of the zinc(I think that is what it is)plant with a huge hole in its roof where part of the meteor hit it.

Has anyone speculated what all the smaller explosions were after the big one? I’m guessing it was fragments that splintered off the meteor and made their own booms.

He also said no one spotted it coming because it was approaching from the direction of the sun.

Ah! The old Jose Conseco syndrome!

I seriously doubt that the Russian missiles actually hit the meteorite. It is more likely that the meteorite slammed into a missile by accident. Nothing is going to accurately intercept and destroy anything traveling at 30,000 mph.
