WASHINGTON -- Sen. Mike Johanns called out his fellow Senate Republicans on Thursday for claiming that they aren't technically filibustering as they try to hold up Chuck Hagel's nomination to be defense secretary.

"It's a filibuster," Johanns said. "If the Democrats were doing this, we would be hollering that this was a filibuster and probably did in the past."

A number of Republicans are pushing to delay consideration of Hagel, the former GOP senator from Nebraska, requiring a 60-vote threshold on a procedural vote that Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., scheduled for Friday.

If the president nominated a competent individual, there wouldn’t be a filibuster. The president chose intentionally to put his thumb in the eye of America, of republicans, and of Israel with Hagel’s appointment. He should be blocked until his nomination is withdrawn.

Wake up senator!

johanns is obviously a insipid loser. Maybe he desires to further screw-up the US defenses. I believe he also is a poltroon.

Seems to me Johanns is supporting Hagel because he is another Nebraskan rather than looking at his record since leaving the senate. Doesn’t say much about the senator from Neb.

There is no filibuster. And it is Democrats who are not allowing it to go to vote.

That is because they would lose today if the vote were taken today.

The Dems blocked Bush 2’s 1st term appointments right up until his re-election.

What are the lefties crying about now?

Nebraska hasn’t had much for US Senators since Jim Exon. Deb is too new to make a determination but she is starting out well. Johanns is about as RINO/GOP-e as you can get.

Have to really wonder why republicans have a second thought about opposing Hagel. He’s a leftist, pretty much of a dunce as well. Where is the downside? We have people in this country who really care about Chuck Hagel?

And btw after what they did to John Tower, I could care less what is done to poor Chuck Hagel.

A former Bush administration official placed into the senate. Like Menendez or Rob Portman.

I prefer US senatoros who bubble up from their individual states, not pushed into the body from on high in lateral moves between departments.

Were I one of mister Johann’s fellow Senators, I actually would walk up to him and tell him to “suck it.”

WRONG! Mike Johanns was Governer of Nebraska before being appointed as Bushie 43’s Sec Ag. Before that he was Mayor of Lincoln, NE.

Johanns served on the Lancaster County Board from 1983 to 1987 as a Democrat.

One of the many reasons Obama wants Hagel is he’s a republican. So he can have a REPUBLICAN gut the Defense Department, a la “only Nixon could go to China.”

The House should prevent the Senate from going into recess next week, because we know he will be recess appointed, despite the DC Circuit’s opinion that a vacancy occur during the recess of the Senate. Panetta’s leaving office today and the Senate is still in session.

As long as GOP "leadership" refuse to see the chess moves this man is making. with regard to the voting population they will forever be playing catch up, politically.

I believe Obama's selection of Hagel is and was intended to taunt the GOP into another fight on a different front while he travels the country spreading "hope" and "progress".

The GOP needs to let him own more of his failure and stop fighting on his terms only.

I didn’t say he wasn’t from Nebraska or served there. It wseems when people serve in an administration, they catch the RINO establishment winds. They make the connections and get the whispers in their ears: “This is what we want to happen so go along with it. You’re from Nebraska too so you have to support this guy. It gives him credence, just like having John Warner sitting next to him in the committee hearing.”
