South African paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder and is in custody after reportedly shooting his girlfriend dead in the middle of the night after mistaking her for a burglar.

Gunfire was heard inside his Pretoria mansion at 4am this morning and it is believed his partner may have been killed after a Valentine's Day surprise went tragically wrong.

The dead woman is Reeva Steenkamp, 30, a former FHM model who had been dating the 26-year-old for two months.

She was shot in the head, the chest and the arm, police have said, and Pistorius will appear in court tomorrow after a hearing scheduled for this afternoon was cancelled.

Pretoria police spokeswoman Denise Beukes confirmed he had been charged with murder, adding they had been called to his home on several occasions since 2011 to deal with 'allegations of a domestic nature'. . .

For a rich white guy in Pretoria, a noise downstairs in the middle of the night is no small matter. I don’t blame the guy for shooting first, after reading so many horror stories of what happened to people who weren’t so quick to defend their property down there.

Perhaps, but the rule is, one is supposed to know what one's target is before one fires.

This terrible tragedy is precisely the reason for that rule.

Hmm....this is totally different from what they reported on the radio this morning.

It was said that loud arguing was heard between the two and the police were in the process of interviewing neighbors. In the meantime he was being held without bond.

More will be revealed, I suppose. Just said either way.

From what I’ve read, police have apparently gone to residence before for issues of a “domestic nature”.

Yikes. Not good. He’s being charged with murder, not manslaughter, and the prosecution has said they will oppose bail for Mr. Pistorius.

He will appear in court tomorrow.

This bastard murdered a beautiful woman.

I hope they take away his fake legs in prison and make him crawl.
