He’s a politician and has to play to all voters, including the 13 million new ones we’re gonna have.

If we keep doing the same thing and expecting different results we are insane.

What humors me is that the spotlight has been taken entirely off of the POTUS’s SOTU tonite by the surrounding of the LAPD Cop murderer Dorner, out in CA. The leadup to the speech is virtually nonexistant on the TV channels, that are all fixated on the police standoff in the mountains outside of LA. After the POTUS’s speech is over, anyone who is watching will immediately switch back to the standoff, and the cable channels will be focused on this, not the POTUS’s speech. Why watch a dull speech when there is an exciting showdown going on out West?

Plus, on another front, there is the fact that Hugo Chavez is on his way out and could die any minute. So delighted Obama’s moment of glory is being obliterated by other news. The only thing I am not delighted about, in fact feel awful about, is the fact that another LAPD officer died in the shootout today with Dorner up in the woods. Hope the other officer that was shot too is okay. Haven’t heard anything yet about his status yet. This Dorner is a one man destruction machine. Just heard a tactical operation is now underway and that teargas has been fired. Back to the TV.

I'm surprised a couple of you call him giving the speech also in Spanish, is pandering. So many Spanish people don't speak English but they vote. Why wouldn't we want them to hear what Rubio says about the economy, our debt, less spending, etc.. I don't believe he is only giving it in Spanish to talk about amnesty. Perhaps that is what you mean, that he's only doing it to give them a “free” pass into the US.

I don't mean to fight with either of you but we're going to have to speak to the Spanish.

Just fifteen years ago, I would go into a local store, and the sound of ANY foreign language would be so unusual and rare that I’d just instinctively turn and make a mental note of it. That was fifteen years ago. Now, I go into the same local stores, and 75% of what I hear is Spanish. I’m now the stranger in my own land... I’m now the one getting dirty looks... and I’m now the one paying through the nose, for schooling, insurance, taxes, and now living in a ratty, degraded third-world atmosphere of increased crime and blight.

At least I haven’t paid as much as my friend across the street, whose young nephew and sister-in-law were smashed into a bloody pulp on the highway by a drunk illegal. Or, the honor student who was down the street on his bike and got run down by two illegals fleeing the quickie-mart they had just robbed.

This is what I think of, when Rubio gives a response in Spanish. The mere thought of it makes my blood boil. I hope every bastard politician that IGNORED our rule of law and let this invasion occur... they can all die in a fire. I’d even lend the matches to get it started. Damn them all to hell. I will NOT be tuning in to Rubio and his amnesty talk.

Thanks for the comment, and likewise, I don't seek confrontation over this matter. That said, I do strongly disagree and unless you have some very persuasive points, I don't think I'll budge from my position. Permit to explain why I take such a hardline stand on the issue of language and why the immigrants must come to our terms and we, not to theirs.

Assimilation works best by total immersion. Here in Texas and elsewhere, we have billboards on the highways in Spanish. The airwaves are filled with Mexican music and Spanish language programs. An immigrant (legal or illegal) is hard pressed to recognize that we're a very different country from whence they came.

There was a time when, in order to become a citizen, proficiency in the language and knowledge of American history was required. In my opinion, we've made it far too easy for people who have no intention of embracing our culture and values to enjoy the benefits of America.

Calvin Coolidge's (a favorite of President Ronald Reagan) words come to mind:

American institutions rest solely on good citizenship. They were created by people who had a background of self-government. New arrivals should be limited to our capacity to absorb them into the ranks of good citizenship. America must be kept American. For this purpose it is necessary to continue a policy of restricted immigration. It would be well to make such immigration of a selective nature with some inspection at the source, and based either on a prior census or upon the record of naturalization. Either method would insure the admission of those with the largest capacity and best intention of becoming citizens. Those who do not want to be partakers of the American spirit ought not to settle in America.

We'll probably still disagree (although will have done so in a FRiendly manner). From my standpoint, speaking English is one of the metrics of "partaking in the American spirit".

I'm not sure what part of the country you're in but I still think you'll find Sean Bass and His Sobering Stance on Driving Drunk an interesting (if not blood boiling) read. I've pinged a few people from hereabouts in the Ft. Worth-Dallas area who are likely familiar with the individual in the story's headline. He has a rather high profile in the area and, like you, is acquainted with the state to which America has descended because of the invasion from across the Rio Grande.

The Dallas Observer is a leftist periodical but I'll give them credit for identifying the driver, Osvaldo Cerda, who took a life:

And in a twist of irony, the article I linked to has the "Ask a Mexican" column on the same page.

Oh good. I could care less about the sotu, but I wanted to hear the rebuttal, and I wasn't sure what time it would be on. The last thing I wanted to do was hear barrack stalins face spewing it's crap again.

Thanks for the info. It saves us a LOT of trouble.

I say that they must speak to US. But we will pander. That’s what the Rs do any more.

I totally agree and lose patience and respect with those who can’t see that pandering is the wrong path to take.

I wouldn’t be surprised if 0bama uses the NK nuke test to argue that the sequestration places America’s forces at great risk at time of danger.

Go ahead and pass the sequestration, then immediately pass a bill to refund the military only, and reduce somewhere else. Democrats couldn't argue with it, because they're using the military cuts as an excuse to forget the whole thing.

Nice charts. Your fellow citizens don’t care. Or else they tremble in fear of being called “racist” by either side if they should notice something’s amiss!
