I admire Senator Rubio but I disagree with him in one respect -- the Constitution is not necessarily strong enough to survive a frontal assault.

The DC v Heller case, decided in 2008, was a 5-4 case with swing vote Anthony Kennedy deciding in favor of gun rights. The liberals at the time all predictably voted with the left, regardless of the Constitution's clear words about "the right of the people to keep and bear arms ... shall not be infringed."

Please, friends, never be complacent about our constitutional rights. We are only one vote away from another lousy decision like Roe v Wade.

We are only one vote away from another lousy decision like Roe v Wade.

And that's on a good day. Seems we are one vote down on good rulings, as of June 2012. We have a rogue republican who undercut us in immigration enforcement and new government control over our lives through health care.

That's assuming SCOTUS even takes another gun case. SCOTUS has a practice of letting the Circuit Courts do the dirty work of disarming the public. Like finding a ban on 10 round magazines to be constitutional (DC Circuit), and SCOTUS denies cert. Piece of cake.

I’d rather the GOP select another point man. I don’t trust this one.

For those who are in support of taking the guns, you need to ask yourself a
very important question, and I am not just talking about the politicians,
because if you support them, you have chosen your side.

Are you willing to die to take my guns?

Roberts is blackmailable. This is why Republicans should always vet their nominees thoroughly (for whatever the post).

And that is why We the People are the final arbiters of the Constitutionality of anything; even when the S.C. gets things wrong (Ha, like the high lawyers know how to read as simple a document as the Constitution) we can always nullify from the jury box and/or cartridge box.

remember rubio disrupted the plans of the effete country club republicans by derailing crist. during the primaries rubio went “door to door” to ask people for their vote. crist relied on the country club. (he still does)

A politician who presses the flesh by shaking hands will listen. a country club effete will disregard people and rely on his hired experts.

trust but verify. but we start at a better location.

2 points of order -— but first, 2 disclaimers:

1. I like Rubio.
2. I like the Daily Caller.

Now, as for this snippet:

1. I thought people stopped using the 90’s phrase “gut check” years ago.

2. calling the quote “dubiously attributed to Jefferson” belittles it, and him.

From Wikipedia:

“The actual quote by Jefferson is “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.”

“A variation of this was written by Alan Moore in the V for Vendetta comic book series in the late 1980s (which was made into a movie in 2005). The quote in this was: “People should not fear their government. Government should fear their people.”

Characterizing a comic book’s paraphrase as “dubious” is either intellectually lazy or intentional. I object to the attempt to divorce Jefferson from this pithy truth.

... and yet, monticello.org, who are presumably good researchers, says:

[Spurious] Quotation: “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.”

Variations:
1.”When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”
2.”Does the government fear us? Or do we fear the government? When the people fear the government, tyranny has found victory. The federal government is our servant, not our master!”
3.“When the people fear the government, that’s tyranny; when the government fears the people, that’s freedom.”

Sources consulted: Searching on the phrase “fear the people,” “government fear us,” “fear the government,” “tyranny has found victory,” and “government is our servant”

-— they searched the following works:

1.Papers of Thomas Jefferson Digital Edition
2.Monticello website
3.Ford’s Works of Thomas Jefferson
4.UVA EText Jefferson Digital Archive: Jeffersonian Cyclopedia, Thomas Jefferson on Politics and Government, Texts by or to Thomas Jefferson from the Modern English Collection
5.Thomas Jefferson Retirement Papers
6.Quotable Jefferson, ed. Kaminski (searching under “tyranny”)
7.Bartleby.com

Earliest known appearance in print: 1914[1] [2]

Earliest known appearance in print, attributed to Thomas Jefferson: 1994[3]

Other attributions: Samuel Adams, Thomas Paine

Status: We have not found any evidence that Thomas Jefferson said or wrote, “When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny,” or any of its listed variations.

Comments: One source attributes this quotation to Thomas Jefferson in The Federalist.[4] The Federalist, however, was the work of Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison; it also does not contain the text of this quotation. This quotation is vaguely similar to Jefferson’s comment in an 1825 letter to William Short: “Some are whigs, liberals, democrats, call them what you please. Others are tories, serviles, aristocrats, &c. The latter fear the people, and wish to transfer all power to the higher classes of society; the former consider the people as the safest depository of power in the last resort; they cherish them therefore, and wish to leave in them all the powers to the exercise of which they are competent.”[5] To date however, the most likely source of this quotation appears to be a series of debates on socialism published in 1914, in which John Basil Barnhill said, “Where the people fear the government you have tyranny. Where the government fears the people you have liberty.”

My favorite quote by him may not be by him at all.

Yea, well, we had a whole bunch of Freepers who said there was no difference between Romney and Obama so when Obama makes more SCC appointments, they will be ultr-liberals. Oh, I know they’re going to say we don’t know that Romney’s would be any more conservative but by golly, no one can say they wouldn’t be and we’d at least have a chance. This way there is NO chance.
