Wrestling should be removed from the 2020 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee's Executive Board recommended on Tuesday as it looks to revamp the Games sports programme.

Wrestling, contested in the first modern Olympics in 1896, will join a list of seven other candidate sports battling for one spot on the programme. It is very unlikely, however, that wrestling will get back in.

The IOC session in Buenos Aires in September will still need to ratify the decision.

In keeping with their PC tests for inclusion, they'll be removing dodge-ball and tug-of-war.

The Olympics has become just another business to generate TV revenue, and to hammer political propaganda into the audience.

They also tend to be a tremendous financial burden to the cities they are held in. The ‘Bird’s nest’ stadium from the 2008 Beijing Olympics is now abandoned, and I don’t think that Greece has fully recovered from the 2004 Olympics. History will probably show the Olympics as being mostly a 20th century thing, from 1896 to 2020

Or, they could just drop all the wasteful pomp and - you know - make it about the sports again. Drop the “inclusion” bullcrap and only let the BEST athletes compete - that would also cut down on the massive expense.

Not really. For one, they don't say which wrestling. There are two types in the Olympics. Greco-Roman and Freestyle.

Second, now that we have The Big Ten Network in HD...who needs to go hunting for Olympic wrestling? I'd rather watch Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State or Illinois any day. Much better competition.

+1 for disgusted. Rasslin is the purest individual sport on earth, IMO.

So far as athletic training goes it's the absolute best thing there is for young men, which probably has something to do with this decision.

Say what? I'm familiar with the differences between karate and taekwondo, but in the sport/olympic version of each... can someone 'splain the difference in the two to me?

Why have one when you already have the other, except for some nationalistic pride on the part of the originating countries involved?

While the U.S. is always competitive in wrestling, it hardly dominates. In London, the U.S. was sixth in the medal count (fifth in number of golds), behind Russia, Azerbaijan, Japan, Iran and Georgia.

As someone who has wrestled, this is terrible. Ping pong gets to stay but not wrestling. As if my hatred for the IOC couldn’t grow anymore!

Jordan introduces resolution opposing Olympic decision to drop wrestling

Congressman Jim Jordan,(R-Urbana), along with fellow Congressmen Tim Walz (MN) and Dave Loebsack (IA) filed a resolution in the House of Representatives Thursday expressing their opposition to the International Olympic Committee’s decision to drop wrestling as a core sport.

“Wrestling defines the Olympic spirit like no other sport. The IOC got this one dead wrong, and their decision threatens to extinguish the dreams of countless American athletes. I look forward to working with my friends in the wrestling community toward reversing this ruling,” said Representative Jordan.

Mr. Jordan won four state titles at Graham and was a two-time national champion at Wisconsin. His brother, Jeff, is the head wrestling coach at Graham.

“The decision by the International Olympic Committee to drop wresting is baffling. The history of collegiate and Olympic wrestling runs through Iowa. From Dan Gable and Tom Brands to Cael Sanderson and Jake Varner, Iowa has represented the sport with determination and the hard work it takes to succeed in life and sport. I will continue to work with my colleagues to change this ruling on behalf of Iowa’s, and America’s, storied wrestling history,” said Rep. Loebsack.

“I am disappointed by the IOC’s decision to eliminate wrestling from the Olympic Games. Minnesota has a storied and rich wrestling heritage. This is especially true in southern Minnesota where wrestling gives students the confidence, courage, and work ethic it takes to be successful not only in the sport, but also in life. I urge the IOC to reconsider their decision and reinstate wrestling as a core sport of the Summer Games,” said Rep. Walz.

Wrestling has been a core sport in the Olympics since 1896.
