The Rising Voice of Gun Ownership Is Female
New York Times ^ | 02/12/2013 | Erica Goode

Posted on 02/11/2013 7:36:51 AM PST by SeekAndFind

PAINESVILLE, Ohio — Mary Ann Froebe stood feet apart with knees slightly bent and aimed the .22-caliber Ruger semiautomatic.

“You’ve got some adrenaline running through you right now,” said Esther Beris, the coordinator of the northeastern Ohio chapter of A Girl and a Gun Women’s Shooting League. “It’s O.K., just relax.”

Ms. Froebe, 42, a small-business owner who described herself as a “virgin gun shooter,” concentrated and pulled the trigger. “It was awesome,” she said, her face flushed, after emptying the 10-round clip. “The sense of control, of being in charge of me.”

In the debate over firearms regulations, the voices of gun owners have largely been those of men. But at firing ranges across the country, a growing number of women are learning to use firearms and honing their skills.

Women’s participation in shooting sports has surged over the last decade, increasing by 51.5 percent for target shooting from 2001 to 2011, to just over 5 million women, and by 41.8 percent for hunting, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.

Gun sales to women have risen in concert. In a survey last year by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, 73 percent of gun dealers said the number of female customers had gone up in 2011, as had a majority of retailers surveyed in the two previous years.

Manufacturers have increasingly geared advertising toward women, marketing special firearms models with smaller frames, custom colors (pink is a favorite), and accessories like the “concealed carry” “salmon kiss” leather handbag offered by Cobra Firearms or the leopard shooting gloves and Bullet Rosette jewelry sold by Sweet Shot (“Look cute while you shoot!” is the company’s motto).

Added, subtle benefit of women ‘carrying’ .... criminals go for women (& others) who “look” vulnrable, lacking self-confidence, exuding a victim mentality. A woman who is carrying is likely not putting off those sorts of vibes!!

My wife accompanied me recently when I picked up a rifle at a gun shop. I've been trying to get a carry gun for a while as she got her CCW a couple of months ago. As I was doing the paperwork one of the guys there was showing her a few pistols. She really liked the Sig P290 w/laser sight they showed so we got that too.

She already had a mint Lady Smith .38 Special that her mother left her and a .22 revolver I got her for Christmas a couple of years ago but they're both a little big for concealed carry.

My daughter-in-law, who is pretty liberal got a Ruger .380 on Saturday. 0bama has done more to increase gun sales than anyone in history.

Excellllleeeeent! I’m stealing that analogy. It’s perfect to illustrate the reason for fire arm tools on your person and in your home. BTW, I keep a fire extinguisher in every bedroom in my home, as well as n the kitchen and a room near the furnace closet.

The whole gun argument should make the most sense to women in general. Women on average are smaller in stature and weaker than men and because of that make up more of the vicitims of crime in the streets. What’s the great equalizer between a 6 foot 200 pound man and a 5 foot 4 130 pound woman? The gun and women are figuring that out.

More and more new members at my gun club are women and not just young women, but older women.

"A Ruger .22 semi-automatic pistol does NOT have a clip."

I love my Mark III. It's a great shooter and accurate and a brick of .22 lr provides a lot of fun at the range for a small amount of money.

Hope I quote this right:

“Gun control: the notion popular among liberals that a woman found raped & strangled to death in a dark alley is somehow morally superior to a woman who is explaining to police how her attacker got that fatal bullet wound.”

Good site, BTW. Thanks for posting the link.

I noticed a book in the left hand column written by a survivor of the Luby’s cafeteria massacre, (her name is Suzanna Hup) she and others could have ended that rampage had they been armed that day. If I remember correctly, her Father was shot and killed as he lay on the floor feet away from her.

She was one of the very first women to advocate for and change CC laws in Texas.

She was an influence on me in deciding to look into owning and carrying for personal protection. She made a very compelling case as a Congress member for our rights.

Who the heck are they marketing to? I'm a female and I own three firearms: a Ruger 9mm, a Ruger .22, and a Remington 12 gauge. I don't own them because they match my handbag or because they come with leopard shooting gloves. I own them because I believe in taking care of myself. I live alone on a rural piece of property. The .22 and the shotgun are useful for keeping nusance fauna at bay. The 9mm is because this is a rural county with a sheriffs department that is short on deputies and long on response time.

Of topic , but how long is it taking in NC for your clients to receive their CCW permits from the state? My darling Husband and I took our classes in Nov. and we are hearing that the usual 90 day wait is going to take longer due to overwhelming requests. We are in SC.

My all time favorite congressional hearing. When Suzanna Hupp testifying about the assualt weapons ban in 1994 and she says that the second amendment is for protecting all of us from all of you. Pointing to the scumbags like Chuckie Schumer. And BTW, both her mother and father were taken out by the killer in Kileen.

It depends on how your law is written.

NC writes it as “must be APPROVED in 90days”. Says nothing about “must be presented to you in 90days”. If it is not approved within 90 days, it automatically is approved by default.

NC writes the law but they cannot control individual county sheriff’s clerical offices. So they can approve it in the time allowed by law, but to actually finish it and hand it to you depends mostly on the size of the stack on top of the clerics desk.

Right now people are saying they stay within the 90 days but my county sheriff has issued a memo stating that due to demand and backlog, CCW can take as long as 6 months. But they are, for now, keeping up.

As I remember she lost both her mom and dad that day and she did have her gun with her, but by law she had to keep it in the trunk of her car where it wouldn’t harm anyone.

If she had it on her she would have stopped the killings. She said that she had a few times where she could have shot the guy and it was pretty early in the rampage. She could have saved her parents if the anti-gun liberals hadn’t assisted the shooter.

I saw this in an earlier post an dthought it was good.

I also like the saying, “I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.”

Here’s something that too many have overlooked. The newer designs for semi-automatic rifles are of more benefit to women than men. The effort to outlaw the ergonomics of those rifles (pistol grips, adjustable butt stocks re. length of pull) is also an effort to stop women from being as ready to defend themselves. Women more often have a much shorter reach for handling rifles. That’s why so many of them hold old fashioned hunting rifles and shotguns oddly.
