Hunt for Christopher Dorner becomes major PR problem for L.A. police
The Christian Science Monitor ^ | February 10, 2013 | Brad Knickerbocker

The hunt for alleged cop killer Christopher Dorner has turned into a major public relations challenge for law enforcement officials, in particular the Los Angeles Police Department working its way back from a history of corruption and abuse.

Not only have hundreds of well-trained officers equipped with military-style vehicles – including helicopters with thermal imaging devices one pilot says can pick out a rabbit in a snowstorm – been unable to find the man charged with killing three people and wounding two others on a rampage aimed at police officers and their families.

The LAPD also has been forced to reexamine the reasons for Mr. Dorner’s dismissal as a police officer in 2009 – brought about, Dorner charges in the 11-page manifesto he posted on Facebook, by racism in the department. And the LAPD is having to make amends to the two people – a middle-aged Hispanic woman and her mother delivering newspapers – wounded when police riddled their truck with gunfire. (The women’s truck was neither the make nor the color of Dorner’s pickup later found abandoned.)

The search for Dorner continued Sunday in and around the San Bernardino mountains east of Los Angeles, but police were on edge and alert to the possibility that the alleged killer had left California. Police in Las Vegas (where Dorner owns property) are now traveling in pairs, and motorcycle patrol officers have been ordered into less-vulnerable cruisers...

The guy sounds like he’s been a “victim” all his life, not just while at thr LAPD. He just got cut loose from the Navy reserves on Feb 1st due to not “meeting physical requirements”... which might have been a nice way of saying they recognized that he’s nuts.

I don’t think he’s a modern day Serpico.

I’m guessing that this guy is a long way from California at the moment.

These seven cops are heroes. So is the cop who rammed the morning commuter, then fired 3-4 rounds into his windshield.

“And what of the behavior the guy describes in his manifesto. How can that be ignored?”

When you remember and take the time to list your complaints back to grade school it speaks of his credibility or lack there of.

He probably got cut loose because he could not meet weight standards!

Perhaps. I would guess that’s what sent him on his current rampage, which means he didn’t plan for long at all... just a few days...which means he’s toast.

“We’ve had some pieces on FR over the years about the LA cops being understrength as compared to police forces in other cities. That’s why they hang back in riots ~ allegedly.
Now that they’re tied down by 1 guy...............

There are much better places to live than LA”

I suspect you’ve got a piece of the answer there - the good, i.e., smart, cops have probably re-located to Phoenix, Dallas, any city without CA following it. What’s left is the also-rans.

Hundreds of LEOs can’t find one man but Feinstein thinks they’ll be able to confiscate tens of millions of guns someday?

Who told us that Dorner killed this guy and the other two?

LAPD of course.

Now that doesn't mean he isn't the perp, but the source of the information is "tainted" at the minimum.

On the bright side they have enough rabbits now to stock several homeless shelters.

If the police keep going the way they’re going, they just might turn this Dorner creep into a new folk hero of sorts… a modern-day Pretty Boy Floyd.

“the Keystone cops shot at a mom and her daughter and a white guy while searching for a large black man, what are they, blind?”

The Keystone Cops didn’t have real weapons and real authority.

Also, they totalled a guy’s car and put him out of work not far from their shooting, which “is under investigation” (i.e., buried).

LAPD of course.

Dorner is suspected in three deaths, one in Riverside and the other two in Irvine. Riverside and Irvine have their own PDs with each conducting its own investigation. Both departments are completely independent of the LAPD. Your assertion is absurd.

Or a dog on a chain in the backyard. Or a kid delivering papers on his bicycle. Hell, I bet they could pick out granny on the porch in her rocking chair.

Or attention to detail and a good memory. I've got a list too: don't normally think about them at all, but in the event they will not be forgetten. (And that includes the towtruck firm that stole the radio out of my damaged Mazda in '73)
