Winter Storm Nemo; Historic Blizzard Looms
Weather Channel ^ | 02/07/13 | Dolce, Erdman

Posted on 02/07/2013 5:06:12 PM PST by GRRRRR

Here we go with another freak out about a winter storm. From naming it like a hurricane to generate more angst, to the continuing reminders that it "COULD" be a top ten storm in all time history, the weather guessers are doing the hype dance.

Granted, this one looks particularly nasty, but most sane people will grab some extra milk and get home early Friday before the main bands hit.

Take cover NE FReepers and keep us updated on how it's coming along.

Post lots of pics from your yards and neighborhoods so we can all OOOOH and AHHHH at the precip!!

Above all, stay safe, get off the roads early!!

Should have named it Satan to make it really scary.

These things happen in that part of the world. I know. I spent 10 years in western NY state.

Oh yeah, I grew up in the north of Chicago area. As a kid in the 70’s there, we used to get 100” or more snow every winter and the ponds and lakes froze solid.

Blame it all on Mount Pinatubo blowing up!

Now, in Colorado where I presently reside, we are having a dearth of precip, only about 50% of the required snow pack.

Jet stream is ripping:

so it should end quickly Sat AM in NYC and a bit later in Boston. With such a short duration I don't see how they get two feet. I will say 16 at Logan putting it out of the top 10 snowstorms there.

If it isn’t more than 3 feet, it is just a heavy snow. It has to be way up over my butt for me to consider it to be a SNOW STORM...from the great snow belt region of central NY. Lucky to live close by to a convenience store...so no I haven’t stocked up on anything...will brave the elements if I need anything.

Cantore on the Wedder Channel said that they expect "banding" of moisture coming in. Much like the hurricane bands.

Here's some stuff for NYC HERE

There are TWO storms coming together ~ the n’or easter itself is churning up down off the Carolanna coast ~ and it will soon be chugging North to merge with/take advantage of the cold air and the disturbance already sucking in a bit of Atlantic air.

Yep, it's normal in some parts of the country. I do not miss the snow drifts up to the gutters of houses, or lake effect snow, or getting up at 5.30 to dig out the 2' barrier of snow at the end of the driveway heaped up by the town plows. Or finding the nearest fire hydrant, marked by an 8 foot yellow stake, and digging it out, just in case it would be needed.

Things were a lot scarier before cell phones. Local land lines used to go down from overuse--no dial tone.

Nice day to work from home.

One of the beauties of being a "prepper" - never having to do last-minute stocking up for storms. Food, water, ammo, generator, fuel - we're good.
