Skeleton found in parking lot identified as that of England's King Richard III, experts say

He wore the English crown, but he ended up defeated, humiliated and reviled.

Now things are looking up for King Richard III. Scientists announced Monday that they had found the monarch's 500-year-old remains under a parking lot in the city of Leicester -- a discovery Richard's fans say will inspire new research into his maligned history.

University of Leicester researchers say tests on a battle-scarred skeleton unearthed last year prove "beyond reasonable doubt" that it is the king, who died at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485, and whose remains have been missing for centuries.

"Richard III, the last Plantagenet King of England, has been found," said the university's deputy registrar, Richard Taylor....

DNA from the skeleton matched a sample taken from a distant living relative of Richard's sister. Geneticist Turi King said Michael Ibsen, a Canadian carpenter living in London, shares with the skeleton a rare strain of mitochondrial DNA. She said combined with the archaeological evidence, that left little doubt the skeleton belonged to Richard.

Ibsen said he was "stunned" to discover he was related to the king -- he is a 17th great-grand-nephew of Richard's older sister.

“It would be funny if the distant relative tries to establish a claim on the throne.”

He has already passed on that option. Wise.

If they’re hiding royalty under parking lots, no telling where Jimmy Hoffa is.

For a guy with a deformity like that he was, by all accounts, quite a fighter. While Henry Tudor hung back in the rear, he was right up in the thick of it, which cost him his kingdom and his life.

I’m sure he’d have been willing to give his kingdom for a hearse.

That's it. Off to the FR penalty box for a million years!

Well, he had to be tough. Riding into battle on horseback with that spine?

Similar to the search for John Paul Jones’ body beneath the streets of Paris early in the 20th Century. Found him in a paved-over a cemetery.

Mayor of Leicester says burial at the local cathedral next year. City has purchased property for a visitors center & museum. In other words, the remains of Richard III will become a tourist attraction. Believe the Richard III Society want him reburied at his home in York.

Odd they only found this body now. They had to build the parking area. Why not then?

Sic transit gloria mundi.

Reminds me of a New York City Daily News headline from years back. Socialite Gloria Vanderbilt was ailing and headed to the City for treatment. Headline boomed "Sick Gloria in Transit".

The article mentions his wounds, including a pelvic injury which is assumed to have come from a post-mortem spear point to the rear end, which they refer to as a “humiliation wound”.

Too bad our modern Kings (or Presidents) no longer lead their armies into battle. We could have used Lyndon Johnson at the head of many a company that took terrible causalities going up some hill only to turn around and walk down the other side a couple of hours later.

Of course if the current CIC had been leading some combat troops in Afghanistan, we would already know if women should be in combat.

The Mob. Clear signs. As we always suspected. Jimmie Hoffa in the foundations of a stadium, King Richard III under a parking lot.
