Skip to comments.Universal background checks would strip 18-20 year olds of handgun rights

Lost amidst the clamor for universal back ground checks are a lot of important details. One of those details, besides the issues of who will pay for universal background checks, and how will such checks be precluded from turning into a registration scheme, is the fact that simply making firearm background checks universal would have to effect of denying the right of 18-20 year olds to own a handgun, even in their home.
In 2008 the US Supreme Court held in District of Columbia v. Heller that the Second Amendment guarantee[s] the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation. At issue in Heller was the District of Columbias statute which forbid the keeping of handguns at home, and the Court said that
the American people have considered the handgun to be the quintessential self-defense weapon. There are many reasons that a citizen may prefer a handgun for home defense: It is easier to store in a location that is readily accessible in an emergency; it cannot easily be redirected or wrestled away by an attacker; it is easier to use for those without the upper-body strength to lift and aim a long gun; it can be pointed at a burglar with one hand while the other hand dials the police. Whatever the reason, handguns are the most popular weapon chosen by Americans for self-defense in the home, and a complete prohibition of their use is invalid.

Not if the state legislators follow SC’s lead and pass a law that won’t allow the unorganized militia to be subject to federal.
Can I get belts of grenades at Dick’s sporting goods?
Universal Background Checks = Gun Registration
just like the ‘no fly list’...
Most of the gun-related homicides in my area are committed by 18-25yos.
Most risky behaviour is by 18-25 year old males.
People need to stop using the framed arguments of the left, as was done in the pro-abortion vs. pro-life arena.
There is no such thing as “gun control.”
It’s “civilian disarmament.” Call it what it is.
Author’s reasoning doesn’t support his claim.
...see the Ammo Supply Sgt...and make sure you type out your DA Form 581 — they hate it when you hand write them...
this is the strict scrutiny test.
do 18-20 year olds have 1, 3,3,5,6,7,8,9 amendment rights?
does a LAW have the right to reverse the change in voting age amendment?
The MSM is beyond mere stupid.
I fired my first rifle when I as 19 in basic,at Fort Benning Georgia, threw my first hand grenade a few weeks later. If you are going to say that 18 to 20 year olds can’t own firearms in the civil sector, then there is no reason for them to serve in the military.
If the government is going to use kids to defend itself, then it might well allow them to defend themselves.
“Authors reasoning doesnt support his claim.”
What is the flaw that you see?
It seems clear to me. Universal background checks will require that people be 21 years old to buy a handgun or have it transferred to them. All other transfers will be illegal.
Therefore, 18-21 year old people will not be able to have a handgun transferred to them legally.
I must be missing something. What is it?
Nice Israeli pistol in that picture!
