WRIGHTSVILLE, Ga. —

A dollar store employee has been arrested for simple battery after whipping a customer's child with a belt.

WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/WGbiFw ) reports surveillance cameras inside a Wrightsville dollar store recorded an 8-year-old boy running around the store and eventually throwing a cookie jar at 39-year-old Emilia Graciela Bell.

Authorities say Bell took off her belt, chased the boy down and spanked him behind the counter.

The boy's father called police and Bell was taken into custody. Police said she was free on bond Friday.

Black mothers discipline other kids on their blocks all of the time.

When I was about 6 years old, my mother and I were in the commissary in Nurnberg Germany when I decided to act an ass. My mother reached over to a young soldier and undid and whipped off his belt and proceeded to beat my ass in the store. When she was finished, she turned to the soldier to return his belt. He replied “no ma’am, you keep it!! I don’t want any of that!!” Needless to say that was the first and LAST time I acted up in the store!!!

Once is usually enough!

Amen on that one ! Even at 47 years old, I still hate shopping.

When my mom went shopping, I had to go to the various department stores (clothes) and I wanted to stay home and watch cartoons. We were at the LS Ayres store one time and went by the TV section and it was Cowboy Bob on Channel 4 and I went to the TV and sat down and my mom promptly yanked me out of the seat and said we had some clothes shopping to do, clothes for herself. Want to add, I was a little $h!t when we were out. I tore off the IBM tags (year 1973) off the merchandise, just was an overall pain in the @$$ !

On top of that, I really dislike Wal-Mart for the main reason, they make it difficult to go in, get your item, pay and leave when there are no people running the checkout counters and the junk they put in the aisles to make it difficult to move quickly through the store. Add insult to injury, the men oriented stuff is at the farthest part of the store from the doors. If I designed the store, I would put all the men items up front by the door and women stuff way in the back LOL.

> Now to you idiot parents, GET THIS LOUD AND CLEAR, KIDS HATE SHOPPING! Get a babysitter, leave them with grandma or here’s an idea: DON’T SHOP FOR ENTERTAINMENT! Get in, get your catsup or toothpaste and get out. You will save money and then take the 8 year olds to the movies, the skate park, or bowling. Sheesh. It’s not that hard people.

The clerk had no right to hit the kid. Period. No matter how big a brat the kid was. Unless it’s self-defense, which wasn’t this case, you simply can’t hit another parent’s kid. Those of you who are applauding the clerk, would be singing a different tune if it were your kid.

I’d like to think that the mindset of most people here at Free Republic would be not to tolerate this behavior and would beat their child with their own belt.

Not the clerk's place to do that. That's an in-house matter. If some strange man put his hands on my kids, I'd knock him out. If a woman did that, I'd handle things the legal way and make sure she's arrested and fired. I'd then handle matters at home appropriately.

Yes, what she should have done was approach the kid in front of a bunch of his friends and tell them how he usually wets the bed and makes a stinkie in his pants.

it is frequently the third party that beats the child to death while the parent stands by.

Mommy's new boyfriend. Not all are that way, but it happens more often than it should.

It appears that dear old dad had no control over the child. A good parent would have disciplined the child or left the premises. Seems to me the parent wasn’t doing his job. So the clerk had to.

After looking at the video did the police charge the eight year old with assault? What penalty does the Father pay for not controlling his child? And truthfully the first thing that crossed my mind was, I wonder if this is another Dr. Spock parent?

I’ve actually done something similar on at least 2 occasions, and will do so again, if the situation demands it.

I took off my belt and whipped a kid who stepped out into traffic and dared me to run over him..

How does that fit into your matrix?

Ok. I guess the clerk should have let the kid throw something else at her. What would it take — a concussion or worse? for some action to be taken.

” And truthfully the first thing that crossed my mind was, I wonder if this is another Dr. Spock parent?”

***

My parents had neighbors whose son had disciplinary problems as a boy. Whenever he would misbehave, the father would want to spank him, but the mother would say, “Wait! We have to consult the book.” The book, of course, was the one by Dr. Spock.

Well, after being raised according to “the book,” the son became a juvenile delinquent. Dropped out of high school. In and out of trouble with the law. Even served time. Some years later, he did straighten out, get a decent job, married and had children of his own. But for a long time it was expected he would spend life in prison or get killed.

It was said that Dr. Spock revolutionized parenting and he did. Spock caused considerable damage to children raised under his permissive principles.
