China now burning as much coal as the rest of the world combined

Want a better sense for why climate change is such a daunting problem? Check out this striking new chart from the U.S. Energy Information Administration: China’s coal use grew 9 percent in 2011, rising to 3.8 billion tons. At this point, the country is burning nearly as much coal as the rest of the world combined.

Coal, of course, is the world’s premier fossil fuel, a low-cost source of electricity that kicks a lot of carbon-dioxide up into the atmosphere. And China’s growing appetite is a big reason why global greenhouse-gas emissions have soared in recent years, even as the United States and Europe have managed to curtail their coal use and cut their carbon pollution.

Does this mean we have to pay China lots of carbon credits to fix the global warming problem? I’m not entirely sure I understand the carbon credit calculations.

Better ask Al Gore, I guess.

I got a better sense of who burns the most coal, but no sense whatsoever about coal and climate change.

Earth to WaPo...your “science” is as believable as a speech by the bat-eared-b*stard.

Well gosh then.

Let’s import more things from China, and send more of our factories over there.

(duh)

This to me is the end of the argument. Whoever promotes a carbon tax should explain why China should get away scot-free if in fact this is a global problem. Unless Congress suddenly acquires the authority to cut CO2 emissions in China, Congress really has very little to say about global emissions. If in fact it really is a problem - and I don’t give real credence to the sort of supporting “evidence” published to support that thesis - I guess we’re in for it, because means anyone is even willing to contemplate cannot solve the problem.

Judging from the focus of the article, mercury and acid-rain causing sulfur emissions are apparently not a problem for Chinese coal burners.

All that coal burning has done wonders for the air quality in China. It’s like London’s coal poisoned air in the 17th century. And libs, of course, are blaming the US for China’s coal usage. They claim the greedy folks in the US are forcing China to use coal so they have enough energy to manufacture and supply us with consumer goods.
