“Worse, his teachers didnt even realize that he knew how to read. But rather than work to improve his vocabulary and get him up to grade level, the D.C. Public School System placed Rashawn in special-education classes. “
Our son was in the 4th grade when his teacher came to us and pointed out that problem to us. Apparently, he was a great “site reader” and could remember a word when he saw it. She offered a special ed class, but there was no way I was going to have him labled “special”. We took him to Sylvan where he was diagnosed borderline dyslexia and they taught him to compensate. He kept his academic scholarship all through college. Thank God for that 4th grade teacher and for Sylvan.
