HHS says it ditched ‘exchanges’ because word doesn’t translate into Spanish

The Obama administration has stopped using the term “exchanges” to describe part of the healthcare law because the word doesn’t translate into Spanish, an official said Thursday. Anton Gunn, director of External Affairs at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), said the rebranding of the insurance exchanges as "marketplaces" was geared toward Spanish speakers who will use the system. "We´re going to use the word ´marketplace´ because it actually makes sense to people," Gunn said at a conference in Washington, D.C. " ´Exchange´ doesn´t translate to anything in Spanish, but ´marketplace´ does."

The irony here is astounding.

Government took a service - medical care - which had always been an optional, free-market commodity in the precious, strong, liberty-filled, dear old America we grew up in...

Twisted it into a mandatory entitlement ...forced you to buy it...

and NOW the regime labels it a "marketplace".

“intercambio” seems to be the correct word. Don’t know why they put “canjear” up twice! We don’t need no steenking “canjear!

“My boss speaks Spanish fluently and can handle the dialects in every Spanish speaking country south of the US.”

You can get by in Italy and Spain as well - and my family speaks a New Mexican dialect. Yes, the government is that embarasingly stupid.

Yes, but “intercambios” doesn’t flow trippingly from the tongue. Yeah, that’s the ticket....

The issue SHOULDN’T be whether it translates into Spanish, Italian, Farsi, Russian etc etc.

Didn’t this a$$wipe state “You better be smart and have your children learn Spanish?”

When I went to Japan/Okinawa/Philippines etc in 1957 majority of people WE had contact with spoke ENGLISH or at least enough English to make sure MY/OUR money went from my pocket to theirs.

Now if a business is in a “Spanish” neighborhood, it may behoove it to have a Spanish speaking person or person on board.

BUT that should be a business decision. OUR GOVERNMENT should NOT be encouraging ‘these’ people. If you can’t read a document, hire a translater. An enterprising person in ‘your’ language group will probably set up shop.

I can’t see me going to court in say Iran or Cuba, the reigning powers PROVIDING me with a FREE LAWYER and TRANSLATOR.

The ONLY division of OUR Government that should be using/speaking a language different than English is the Immigration Department.

Ballots, food stamps, welfare check etc should be in English, NOT Spanish, Farsi etc etc etc.

The word for exchange in Spanish is “intercambio” as in,”intercambio cultural” for academic and arts programs.

The word for exchange as in the stock exchange is “la bursa”.

The word for exchange as in taking back a gift to a store to exchange it for something you like more is “entregar”.

Any eleven year old who is Spanish-speaking knows these words.
