Result is culmination of years of ruinous economic policy by Zimbabwe's despotic President Robert Mugabe
Zimbabwe's finance minister has taken a hard look at the cash strapped country's bank accounts - and discovered it only has £138 and 34 pence left.
Tendai Biti made the announcement at press conference yesterday declaring: 'Last week when we paid civil servants there was $217 in government coffers.'
Mr Biti went on to tell the shocked news reporters that they were individually likely to have healthier bank balances than the state's.
'The government finances are in paralysis state at the present moment', Mr Biti admitted.
However, Mr Biti today contradicted his claims by saying that the poor state of the country's finances only lasted a day.
Speaking to the BBC, he said the following day about $30m of revenue was paid into the government's accounts.
Mr Biti claims he made the remarkable revelations to highlight that the government could not finance the constitutional referendum and election that are planned for sometime later this year.
Speaking to the BBC's Focus on Africa radio programme, he claimed his statement had been misreported.
He said: 'You journalists are mischievous and malicious - the point I was making was that the Zimbabwean government doesn't have the funds to finance the election, to finance the referendum,' he said.

$217 in the bank. They have hit bottom
Now all they need is Mugabe to die, and they can start to move up.
All they need to do is contact that rich, dying African prince who needs to deposit his millions somewhere...
Then the socialists and marxists came to power and it became Zimbabwe.
Stolen Toyota Hilux:
Surplus beret, worn like you’re a walking fungus:
Confiscating millions of acres of rich, fruitful land, torturing, terrorizing, killing and expelling thousands upon thousands of families who have been in-country for generations just because they’re white, then completely wrecking their land, your land, your country, your economy, your public health, your security, your families, and now living in utter desolation just because you’re a murderous, rampaging bunch of vile, disease-infected fascist thieves and now groveling on hands and knees to the fat white commies at the United Nations:
As said On Rush yesterday, thats 16 trillion one hundred thirty Eight dollars and Thirty four cents more than what we Have in the Bank
The surplus funds should immediately be invested in Superlotto, which currently has a $300 Million prize! Problem solved.
Speaking of money, I hope you appreciate that Dr. Mugabe gave up a lucrative gynecology practice in the East End in order to selflessly serve his country. He has also used his medical training to see to it that no Rhodesian overeats.
I also have no doubt that our present recumbent in the WH, who shares African heritage, will soon assign Community Organizers from Chicago to this country. It is obvious that more welfare and universal health care are needed and that whoever is left among the wealthy white farming community must pay their fair share of the new taxes to be recommended.
Dr. Mugabe, not being an Arab, was not selected for last year's "Arab Spring Festival." But 2013 could see a spectacular "Springtime for Mugabe" festival. Stay tuned.
