Ah the FOBit’s.
....a bit off topic... but after reading all the posts by so many of you who have served in the military, I just want to say thanks to each of you for your service. May God bless all of you and your families.
I, too, think we should bring all of our troops home NOW. How many more must die or be maimed for people who don’t want us there or don’t appreciate the sacrifices of our men and women?
re the breakfasts, if Obama can send $155 million to help people of Syria, think our troops in Afghanistan should get the breakfast they want.
MREs because meals are not available is part of business. This sounds like someone is just shortchanging troops who COULD have 3 meals if someone just wanted to make it happen.
I thought breakfast was the best bet at a chow hall, because it is hard to screw it up.
my staff examined ways to reduce our footprint and set the conditions for the reduction of forces, explained Col. Joe Wawro, an infantry commander for the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat team. (1st Inf Div)
I don't believe in 2nd guessing the commander on the ground, and especially not on something as routine as how best to serve chow while drawing down his number of personnel.
The Czar found out what happens when you piss off the soldiers.
I would say this....if I were in a unit on some deployment order for a week, and had to use the MRE’s for breakfast...I wouldn’t say much of anything. It’s decent, and I’d probably start to use oatmeal mix more often. But....after a week of MREs...I’d be asking for fruit, and after two weeks...I’d really like to have a real breakfast occasionally. You’d think that a unit would deploy into a zone....do a week or two, and then pull back into some real camp where they’d get a couple of days of rest and cooked food.
“Nothing smells like a Mess Hall - Uh, Dining Facility - Um, sorry DFAC - at breakfast time.”
Lol, so true. I narrowed that smell down to a combination of the hot maple syrup bin, sausage and last week’s steaks. Just smelling it adds two lb.s.
I don’t know why they cut breakfast since it’s usually people’s favorite. Maybe it had the highest transportation and support requirement.
If was the smell of the oven baked bacon whaffing through the early morning woods that allowed Recon elements to home in on the “important” targets on the big FTXs in the states during the 70’s and early 80’s.
The grunts out in the brush would be on combat rations - C’s or MRE’s - while the higher level staff would have the field kitchens working overtime.
This is a one party country now. Don't you read the news here? It's all good cop/bad cop now. It's one party. We're all being played.
MREs are not cheap and serving them is not really a way to save much money. I think it is being done more to cut a shift of civilians that work in the DFAC and reduce the amount of personnel on base than to save money. If you cut mid-rats and breakfast, you probably cut 1/2 of the TCNs that work there. The DFAC would only need to serve hot meals from 1030 2030, instead of pretty much around the clock. The military does not work in the DFACs here. The mess hall folks here are mostly TCNs from the Balkans, India, Pakistan, etc and the Army has to provide life support for them (billeting, showers, laundry facilities, security, etc.). Some of the FOBs are supposed to be closed or turned over to the locals soon. If this is happening on those bases than it makes a lot of sense. I suspect that they will be doing this at every base shortly before it closes. They are already doing some annoying stuff on the base I am on in preparation for drawing it down and it is slated to be one of the last ones closed.
have you ever opened an MRE? Those things emit satanic gasses without cooking.
Those things emit satanic gasses after digesting!
Telling the troops to rough it,when they have to rough it,is part of any military.Having them rough it,when it is cheaper is stupid. It is acting like amateurs
Four years ago, we still had the best fed, best equiped and best fed military force in the world.
I only had a few MREs but liked the spaghetti meal myself.
The “Meatballs in BBQ Sauce” of the ancient days was the best. I’ll never forgive those bastards for scrapping that one!
Hate I missed that one.
My few MRE experiences were as a weekend nogo (early 90s) 19K. At times would have loved to had some of those MREs while at sea esp. for midnight rations.
