Washington Post Column: Why the assault weapons ban is (probably) going nowhere
Washington Post ^ | 01/29/2013 | Aaron Blake

Posted on 01/29/2013 12:31:18 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) introduced a new version of the assault weapons ban on Thursday.

And it’s already looking like a lost cause.

Most everyone agrees that the ban is the most ambitious and politically difficult item on President Obama’s and Vice President Biden’s gun control agenda. And there is increasing evidence that it will be cast aside in favor or more doable proposals. Below, we look at four reasons why.

1. Joe Biden is downplaying it

The same day that Feinstein introduced the bill, Biden suggested that magazine sizes were the most important part of a gun control package. ”I’m much less concerned, quite frankly, about what you call an assault weapon than I am about magazines and the number of rounds that can be held in a magazine,” Biden said in a Google Hangout. He added that “more people out there get shot with a Glock that has cartridges in a (high-capacity magazine)” and also suggested that shotguns are more deadly than so-called assault weapons. Biden then again downplayed the ban again during a two-hour roundtable discussion on Friday.

This, we remind you, is all within 24 hours of the assault weapons ban being introduced by a Democratic senator. And Biden is already giving us reasons why it’s not that big a deal.

Biden is the point man on all of this. His words matter, and he’s quite aware of the current politics of his issue. The fact that he’s downplaying the assault weapons ban suggests that it’s not likely to happen and he doesn’t want the whole thing to be viewed as a failure if the ban isn’t passed.

2. The votes aren’t there

The passage of Obamacare was the signal that anything can happen, and nobody can ever relax.

We were sure the magic negro could not beat Hillary WRONG

We were sure the obomination could not pass a socialist health care plan WRONG

We were sure Public Enemy #1 could not be re-elected with unemployment so high (and even higher than the government and media told us) WRONG.

So how on God’s green earth are we to be sure King Kenyan cannot finish the destruction of the 2nd Amendment? Come on, after all, we allowed them to pass law after law after law which infringed on an Amendment which specifically states “SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED” and we are supposed to believe he and his propaganda machine in the MSM will not win?

No, we will lose the 2nd Amendment and very likely before the end of this vermin’s term.

With the EPA about to be given free reign on banning lead ammunition we should all realize why the EPA and other agencies have been buying up ammo like crazy. They are preparing for what we do not have the backbone to do.

To the Founders, I apologize for failing to retain what you gave us.

NOTE: Peeps who are here without the specific consent of the United States are here unlawfully, so it’s like they really aren’t here ~ no visa, no visita ~ so they wouldn’t be covered under the Second

hahaha where did you get that idea from?

” ”I’m much less concerned, quite frankly, about what you call an assault weapon than I am about magazines and the number of rounds that can be held in a magazine,”

So if I carry a gun with a 15 round mag and fire only 4 rounds during the commision of a crime, mag capacity wasnt a factor right? I bet hoods rarely fire more than 2-3 rounds no matter what they are carrying.

And the 2 seconds or less that it takes to change out a mag is going to save lives? Hmmm...

Dunno about you, but I don’t think I can cross a room and jump a guy in those two seconds.

Second refers to 'people', but it also has an antecedent that says 'free state' and 'militia' ~ visitors without visas are not part of the peeps ~ they are part of somebody else's peeps and maybe even a foreign militia or foreign state ~ or maybe they're ENEMY ALIENS.

The USSC has not said that EVERYBODY is among the PEOPLE in every part of the Constitution BTW ~ just in some rulings, but not in others.

The point here is to get the Democrats in the House to vote AGAINST illegal aliens at the same time they vote for gun control! ~ or ~ vice versa!

“Dunno about you, but I don’t think I can cross a room and jump a guy in those two seconds.”

In a no escape route situation I think I would try. We know that in these incidents it is human nature to hunker down, hide and hope the creep goes away. In theory it is better to attack the shooter or throw heavy objects but it is tough to train people to do this. God forbid I am ever in this situation but I might wait for the slide to lock back and charge. The hope is that the shooter will get rattled by a screaming lunatic carrying a chair and blow the mag change. Of course the preferred response would be to shoot back as soon as he opens up.

The point is that limiting magazine capacity will make absolutely zero difference in mass shootings.

So, there must be some other agenda.

That other agenda could be as simple as the liberal wanting to feel good about himself, of course.

Well their psyops worked. Benghazi is off the public’s radar and Hilary gets a pass. Perhaps we can find some other topic to discuss for the next four years.

“So, there must be some other agenda.”

None of their proposals ever deal with solving problems. The goal is always to advance their agenda any way they can. Here is the key to understanding the left: Dont waste your time looking for consistency, logic, double standards, hypocracy, etc. Leftists are not restrained by those concepts. Just know that with the left the only important thing is whatever advances my agenda TODAY. It doesnt matter if what they said yesterday is the exact opposite of what they are saying today. All that matters is that it helps TODAY. Once you realise that, it all makes sense.

Quite a few feminist organizations (including corporate women’s organizations) behind the divorce/cohabitation regime comprised the “Million Mom March” against the Second Amendment a few years ago. Biden has tried to work quite a bit for that constituency. This time around, a few global business moguls are also in the effort. That’s why we see so much noise about it.

But most voters by far are against gun control, so the issue is poison to politicians who are watched. Watch their votes closely. List them. Remember them for the next elections. Write to members of Congress and state assemblies. Let them know the consequence of losing elections, should they vote in favor of any compromise.

Universal background checks are unacceptable, too. It is noting more than a way for the government to fill in the gaps of their illegal database.

Absolutely true! Including limitation on magazine sizes from 30 to 10 or whatever. Socialists/demTurds/commies like 0dumb0shit & the entire demoRAT part are masters of incrementalism. A little here, a little there, and in 5-10 years they've succeeded in their gun grab. In fact I believe we will see massive limitations of simply purchasing ammo, if anything simply because the moment it appears on the shelf, it is stripped bare.

BTW, where can I get .308 ammo? Gander Mtn, Fleet Farm, are completely stripped bare. 30-06 ammo still looks to be readily available. Anyone is welcome to respond. MN / WI locality.

People (mostly women) think they're friggin' machine guns...'cuz they saw 3 minutes of Rambo!!

In the interest of accuracy, make that (mostly liberal). Lots of liberal guys are just as ignorant as liberal women when it comes to guns.

At the same time, if you ask any of these people whether .22 rifles should be banned, you'll usually get an offended "Of course not".

Thanks for your answer however! I was just at Gander tonight, and their ammo stock has been replenished but with the exception of 223 and 308 ammo. Apparently there is another ammo shipment coming in this Thursday!

“When it comes to the assault weapons ban, Biden and Democrats like Feinstein are setting expectations somewhere between “not going to happen” and “unlikely.” And that’s probably about where they should be.”

And while the Obama et al race on to other issues to commandeer, their opposition remains paralyzed preparing for a grand fight which won’t happen.
