Cameron is already pushing an EU referendum to deal with the rising tide of support for the UK Independence Party.

Maybe putting this info out will deflect responsibility from Mr. Cameron in the eyes of anti-gay marriage voters.

After reading this comment, and going 'huh?', I got the very helpful elaboration in the following sentence:
