Sen. Ted Cruz to House GOP: ‘Stop Reading the ‘New York Times'
CNS News ^ | 1/28/2013 | Elizabeth Harrington

Posted on 01/28/2013 4:33:46 AM PST by IbJensen

Speaking Saturday at the conservative National Review Institute summit, Cruz said, “Let me give three concrete bits of advice to conservatives in Washington, and in particular let me address this to our friends in the House of Representatives, who I think for the next two years are the last bastion standing between us and oblivion,” the freshman senator told a gathering of conservatives at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

“The first thing I would urge to every Republican in the House of Representatives is stop reading the New York Times,” he said. “Cancel your subscription.”

“Listen, the media is going to tell you—I’ll sum it up, the next two years of headlines from the New York Times: ‘The Democrats Are Right,’ ‘Abandon Conservative Principles’ and ‘Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter,’” Cruz said. “Their answer—and it will be their prescription on every single fight—here is what conservatives and Republicans need to do: abandon your principles and become Democrats.”

The Tea Party favorite said the Republican majority in the House has “every bit as much mandate” as President Barack Obama does, since both were reelected in 2012, and Republicans should work in the short term to stop the agenda of the Democrats.

“Listen to that speech on the Inaugural Day,” Cruz said. “Whether it is coming after our guns, which, oh boy, they seem excited to do. Whether it is exploding spending and debt and taxes even more, whether it is cap and trade regulating our economy and raising the cost for every American, they are feeling emboldened right now.

“And if conservatives stand together, we can stop that; and stopping bad things that would harm this country, that would harm Americans, is a major victory for the next two years,” he said.

Cruz specifically urged Republicans to use the next short-term budget bill (continuing resolution) and the debt ceiling as leverage points. “If nothing passes, the result is not a default on the debt,” he said. “That’s scaremongering from the president.”

Refusal to extend the debt ceiling would result in a temporary partial government shut down, Cruz said. “And we’ve seen that movie before. In 1995, when Republicans stood together and the result was some political pain to be sure, but it was also year after year of balanced budgets and some of the most fiscally responsible policies from Congress we have seen in modern times.”

Cruz said the Republican Party should champion a message of growth and opportunity to win future elections.

Each year the National Review Institute (NRI) hosts the country’s leading conservatives at its annual summit in Washington, D.C. William F. Buckley Jr. founded NRI in 1991 as a public educational offshoot to his conservative magazine, National Review.

Cruz was among several politicians appearing at the summit this year, along with Gov. Scott Walker and Rep. Paul Ryan, both Wisconsin Republicans, Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-La.), and Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-Va.).

I believe that 98% of the rags referred to as 'newspapers' are nothing but shills for the elite political class and this phony 'president' who is America's first illegal president. There are, unfortunately, many more dogs elected to the presidency, but this one is in a class by himself. I cancelled my subscription to the local leftist rag within two months of moving here.

Conservatism is about protecting our constitutional rights and wanting a responsible fiscally sound goverment, yet were are referred to as extremist by the NY Times and the liberal media. Interesting though both the NY Times and NY are broke and they know what's good for us. The central socialist government as well as the socialist state governments are broke and they have no business in their evil march towards completely ruining this nation and our lives.

Yes!

President Cruz.

But why do we have to slog through four more years of tyranny? This louse is a traitorous dog as are all of his homosexual, transgendered, lesbian staffers and appointees.

I guess it’s unkind to refer to these people as dogs, rather they are the lowest form of life crawling through sewers on their journey to hell.

I wouldn’t say to stop reading it because that’s a democrat game. However I would constantly remind congressmen that the NY Times speaks for a very small left wing segment of the country and they would serve us better by listening to their constituents.

What a dream. The GOP will never dare to try it.

Ted Cruz is one of the very few who even dare to bring up a suggestion that will “rock the boat” for RINOs.

People do not understand that the GOP cannot be fixed. And, even if it could, time has run out. The next four years will show the “death blow” the Republicans have dealt to our great country and the freedoms we once had. It’s simply too late for we have already fallen over the Marxist cliff.

Hopefully, those like Ted Cruz and other super patriots can form another party in time to even give us a chance in taking our country back, but it will not happen withing the RINO party.

You got that right. That scumbag Menendez didn’t get one question about his prostitutes on ABC news. Only pubs get dirt dished out on them. Bring on the revolution!

The "objective media" has always been a myth, created during WW II when America had common enemies in National Socialist Germany, and later World Socialist Russia.

During Revolutionary times, you had patriotic newspapers and Loyalist newspapers. In the 1800's, you had Democrat papers and Republican papers, pro-slavery papers and anti-slavery papers, etc.

I would personally love to have a conservative version of MSNBC (the big difference is that they wouldn't be lying). CNN tends to be moderate-left to left, while Fox is moderate-right. Glenn Beck is building a media empire that could possibly do just that. If it got big enough, then Republican politcians might not feel the need to go to Katie Couric for "intimate one on one interviews".

We should keep mocking the NY Times. Make fun of it. Make it even more uncool to be a NYT reader. Why read corporate news when you can read citizen media? NYT readers are corporate kiss-asses (or something to that effect). Pet stores can sell bird cages with NYTs lining the tray for free. I mean,,we gotta get creative here.

Besides the media the biggest stranglehold the libs have on our culture is education. That’s another huge battleground.
Maybe local school board situations deserve more attention. Heck local everything deserves more attention. So much to do

That's the best line from a politician in a while.

We can say we only read the NYT when we want a laugh and to gain some insight on the alternative version of reality they offer. I am going to be busy finding a local cause to get behind.

GOP Elite behave like Junior High kids, when it comes to being more concerned with what others think about them, than they care about doing what is right.

People do not understand that the GOP cannot be fixed.

There are some GREAT politicians in this party. We just need to get them into leadership positions.

Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio, Alan West, Scott Walker . . . even John Kasich. If you look at what Mitch Daniels has done, and not what he has said, I like him too. Bobby Jindal - school vouchers and proposing to eliminate the income tax.

This guy is NOT taking hostages. I LOVE IT!!!!

...and don’t forget, The Establishment didn’t want him (and Rubio) in office. The same Establishment that is telling us that we need Amnesty, because we’re not doing enough for Hispanics.

We are being SCAMMED (again) on this Amnesty push, by The Establishment.
