Up to 233 billion barrels of oil discovered in southern Australia
Watts Up With That? ^ | January 24, 2013 | Anthony Watts

From the Telegraph:

The discovery in central Australia was reported by Linc Energy to the stock exchange and was based on two consultants reports, though it is not yet known how commercially viable it will be to access the oil.

The reports estimated the company’s 16 million acres of land in the Arckaringa Basin in South Australia contain between 133 billion and 233 billion barrels of shale oil trapped in the region’s rocks.

The find was likened to the Bakken and Eagle Ford shale oil projects in the US, which have resulted in massive outflows and have led to predictions that the US could overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest oil producer as soon as this year.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/australia/9822955/Trillions-of-dollars-worth-of-oil-found-in-Australian-outback.html

WUWT reader John V. Wright in his Tip and Notes submission writes:

This is a huge problem for PM Gillard. No one lives out there so all the usual garbage about shale oil extraction causing earthquakes and threatening people’s home will not wash. So now she has got to get thinking – how can I put the kibosh on this fantastic energy windfall for Australia without it being completely obvious that I am only interested in squeezing every last ‘green’ tax dollar out of the idiots who voted for me last time?

Looks like the area around Woomera. I have never been their but 3 or the research rockets we built were launched from there. It was an old lake bed North of Adelaide.

Bet the Ausies will take the money with one hand and protest the destruction of a pristine (although “extremely” desolate) area with their other hand.

I know that they do extensive mining just south of that particular lake bed.

Australian Greenies may have a problem stopping this .

I think we're going to get another "Midnight Oil" song out of this.

South Australia leads the country in wine and brandy production and is a significant supplier of meat, wood, printing, cement and concrete products, iron and steel, motor vehicles, appliances and electrical equipment. The State has a well developed mineral industry and in recent years crude oil and natural gas have surpassed coal and iron ore as the major products. The Cooper Basin in the north-east supplies Adelaide and Sydney with natural gas and is Australia's major on-shore natural gas source. A copper and uranium mine is located at Roxby Downs in the mid north, significant amounts of iron and steel are produced at Whyalla. Coober Pedy and Andamooka are important centres for opal mining.

I've been a busy bee today trying to flatten out an area of terrain in Afghanistan's Zubul province where based on Google Earth maps my nephew is residing in a forward operating base.
Finally got it figured out. Then had to build stone perimeter walls around the base, and start to populate it with hangers, tents, barrack areas, single walled in home areas, fuel trucks, beacon towers....blah blah.
Slowly it is shaping up to look slightly like air photos depict it as.
I plan on using it as a heliocopter base where I can make flights between say Bagram AFB or the main Kandahar base.
I'm now proficient enough to pilot some of the choppers I have in Micro Soft FSX Flight Simulator.
I like the CH47 Chinook quite a bit. Lots of practice still needed for me to take off in a smooth vertical accent, and then fly the beast around. But it is a lot of fun.
So I have spent little time at FR or elsewhere on the Internet today other then getting rather disgusted at watching some parts of the Hanoi John Kerry Senate conformation.
I'll spare you on that one.

It will be interesting to see how this deal might play out for the oil/gas companies. I'm sure their crazy environmentalist will find a particular spider that grows to the full size of a tiny pea to keep much from happening.

Yo Fred. Hope all is well with you and yours. Let us hope your country continues on the road for energy independence, as well as producing many quality jobs in all sectors of these industries to export above and beyond what your country needs for the distant future.
I do hope the estimated barrels on the high side is realized.
