Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show doomed

Did you have plans for attending the grand-daddy of sports and outdoor shows, the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show held in Harrisburg, PA in February?

You might want to reconsider.

The show’s promoters have banned all references to America’s favorite rifle, the AR-15 and those like it. This is the announcement from their website (you can Google it, but we’re not putting any links, hot or not, to the ESOS website):

As a hunting-focused event, we welcome exhibitors who wish to showcase products and firearms that serve the traditional needs of the sport. Clearly, we strongly support the 2nd Amendment. However, this year we have made the decision not to include certain products that in the current climate may attract negative attention that would distract from the strong focus on hunting and fishing at this family-oriented event and possibly disrupt the broader positive experience of our guests.

Gun owners are not amused.

They’ve made their voices heard and vendors are pulling out left and right. Literally every hour, big names in the shooting world are pulling out.

(OF Mossberg pulled out as I was typing this report).

They are listed at a Facebook Page entitled, “Boycott the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show”.

The show had about 1200 vendors, according to media reports, and nearly 20% of them have cancelled plans to attend, including big names like Cabelas and the NRA.

So, if you were considering attending, and paying $14 a day for the privilege to walk around and see a bunch of vacant floor space, go ahead and knock yourself out.

You’ll have plenty of room to navigate this year, we guarantee it.

It is possible that a class action lawsuit will be filed by vendors.
Of course that does not help them short term, but long term Reed is finished.

Wanting to avoid drawing negative attention?

I think they really messed up in their approach to that.

They may be able to sue. Some enterprising attorney can find a case in this. Sue, sue, sue!!! Force the limey’s to eat up any profit they had hoped to make, in legal fees.

The guy that runs their US operations lives in Connecticut. He graduated from Baylor and started his career in journalism. I would be extremely surprised if he isn’t a lib.

Also, they are part of Reed Elsevier Group, a huge media conglomerate, and they show strong growth in their exhibition business. Hopefully this will damage that growth a bit, but I strongly doubt it will see them change their euroweenie attitude.

Have been going to that show twice a year most years since the late 1990's.

Now suffering withdrawal symptoms...gladly...

Lots of smaller shows in south-central PA...Hopefully this allows them to expand their attendance base..

Even if those marxist scumbag brits recant, I'm not sure I'll go back to their Farm Complex show again. Too bad. Was definitely one of the best shows in the Nation.

The ONLY major sponsor left is Progressive Insurance, see bottom of their home page:

http://www.easternsportshow.com/

The last time I check, over the weekend, there were 4 major sponsors - 3 have now left. Progressive is suspected of having caused this little problem in the first place, as they are an extreme LEFT-WING organization using insurance as a business front (much as Islamic terrorists use ‘charities’).

I sure as heck HOPE that there are no more FReepers still using this criminal enterprise - but if you are, PLEASE CANCEL as soon as you can, and let them know why. That is the ONLY WAY this FReeper will forgive you.

The original sponsors were Progressive, Comcast, Cabella's and The Outdoor Channel.

Cabella's dropped out on principle before the boycott movement really got moving. For that they deserve credit - and our patronage. I plan to drive all the way to Goodyear this weekend just to buy... something.

The Outdoor channel must have gotten absolutely hosed with e-mails from people asking why they paying for The Outdoor Channel as a "premium service" when the channel was sponsoring this. Their dropping out is predictable.

Comcast is a different story. In a lot of places they are a virtual monopoly and have a very left wing board. Gun owners have very little leverage with Comcast. The only reason I can think of for them to bail is that they don't think many people are going to show up.

Would love to know what hotel bookings are like in the Harrisburg, Mechanicsburg, Hershey area for the weekend of the show compared to last year.
