Leveson: EU wants power to sack journalists

A European Union report has urged tight press regulation and demanded that Brussels officials are given control of national media supervisors with new powers to enforce fines or the sacking of journalists.

Lord Justice Leveson's inquiry did shine a light on some genuine and shocking abuses of press power - Leveson Report: Cameron’s Tory principles are protecting our ancient liberties

The “high level” recommendations that will be used to draft future EU legislation also attack David Cameron for failing to automatically implement proposals by the Lord Justice Leveson inquiry for a state regulation of British press.

A "high level" EU panel, that includes Latvia’s former president and a former German justice minister, was ordered by Neelie Kroes, European Commission vice-president, last year to report on "media freedom and pluralism". It has concluded that it is time to introduce new rules to rein in the press.

“Media councils should have real enforcement powers, such as the imposition of fines, orders for printed or broadcast apologies, or removal of journalistic status.”

As well as setting up state regulators with draconian powers, the panel also recommended that the European Commission be placed in overall control in order to ensure that the new watchdogs do not breach EU laws.

Hitler, Mussolini, Lenin, Stalin, European Union?

What the hell is going on over there? We saved their asses three times for “freedom”, including that of speech and the press, and these leftist bastards turn right around and piss on our sacred fallen servicemen and women.

I wonder if Obama is going to try and follow their recommendations? Already Google is screwing around with interruptive censorship under false pretenses.

Let’s see if the Obamites come right out into the open and declare war on the First Amendment, or will they, like the EU, appoint a fascist/marxist “press death panel”?

Also, let’s see if the liberal MSM in the US weighs in on the EU’s draconian proposals or whether, like the leftist cowards they are, remain silent.

You know where my money is placed.

MM, a 45 year long journalist and definitely on someone’s shit list. Let the EU get in line.

I only hope that you are right. Even being able to raise the specter of doing so has a chilling effect.

Journalist background checks, annual license fees, certificate of mental fitness before allowing to publish?

They would love it and it would keep the citizen reporter from messing up their gig.

The EU is a customs union. Its members have to adhere to phone-books full of regulations designed to protect specific national industries in order to trade internally. Member countries also face immense barriers to trading outside of the union, such as a common external tariff.

The EU is the antithesis of Free Trade: it is a protectionist bloc. It lives and breathes protectionism.

Fortunately the economy over there won’t support an effective military, not until they rediscover slave labor.

When will Obama supporters call for this? They already call any dissent hate and any opposition racism.

This needs a bump, as well as far more replies. I must say that I’m rather shocked that more US conservatives don’t realize the stark and historic significance of moves like these, especially in Europe at large, never mind the European Union.

IOW, they want anyone opposed to the treaty to be fired — seems like a good time to start cutting throats.

Thanks rmlew for the topic, and thanks Olog-hai for the link.

Hell, I’d like the power to sack journalists too.

I’d fire ‘em all but for Mary Katharine Ham and then bring her in to...consult.

Already in Canada print and oral speech.

How many journalists get fired in Canada over what they write?

No, no. The intimidation is in the law. They don't write it in the first place.

Those who do are sued in something like "Politically Correct Court" at the drop of a hat by anyone who just claims to be offended.

Who's the guy who substitutes on Limbaugh, from Canada, Mark Stein? He talks about it all th4 time.
