Is Harry an old-fashioned warrior prince?
The Guardian ^ | Tuesday 22 January 2013 | Tristram Hunt

Compare and contrast one Prince Harry with another. This week, our own Captain Wales, in the PlayStation language of modern warfare, spoke of the ugly, deadly reality of service in Afghanistan. "Take a life to save a life, that's what we revolve around. If there's people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we'll take them out of the game." As a soldier, what mattered most was the safety of his mates. "I'm not here on a free pass … Our job out here is to make sure the guys are safe on the ground and if that means shooting someone who is shooting them, then we will do it."

Shakespeare's Henry V, on the eve of storming Harfleur, had it slightly differently. "Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; / Or close the wall up with our English dead. / In peace there's nothing so becomes a man / As modest stillness and humility." But his "band of brothers" were equally unafraid of drawing blood, and would "not leave the half-achieved Harfleur / Till in her ashes she lie buried".

The revelation that Prince Harry might have been involved, as an Apache helicopter pilot, in mortal combat operations in Afghanistan should come as little surprise to observers of both this reluctant Windsor "spare" and the history of British royalty. From the dawn of kingship on these isles, monarchy and armed service have gone hand in hand.

I have a hunch that only a few layers off the onion would reveal a Royal who could give Henry VII a run for his money.

Cheap shot. The dude is a warrior with money. He could be in the rear with the gear, but he puts his ass on the line for his country. So he went with a few buddies to Vegas-as a single man with no children-and had a blast? Good on him, mate.

Mentioning something that is “good on him” is a “cheap shot”?

You realize that makes zero sense?

Just my opinion, but I think it was a stupid comment on his part. I am sure it is probably true, but why say it. The Taliban will try to retaliate, possibly in the UK, and people will probably die because of it. Again, just my opinion. I see no up side in the comment.

Oh no we mustn’t insult the Taliban.

Dear Lord man, listen to yourself. These people killed 3000 of your countrymen. I guarantee you it’s not keeping them up at night.

Harry is displaying a commendable detachment about killing a large number of murderous scum at long distance.

The poisonous left-wing Guardian want him to crawl into a hole. Why would you even begin to agree with them?

Totally agree, he’s out there making a difference. Now count how many Bush, Clinton, Obama kids are in theatre. None.

The retaliation - when it comes - will definitely be in Britain. That's the way Islamic radicals work. Strategically, it makes little sense to go up against professional British soldiers in-the-field. Bomb a subway or a shopping district and create a very grisly scene (ie. non-antiseptic warfare). That's the kind of message that they will want to send.

If he were he would face the enemy invading the streets of British cities rather than the pointless efforts in Afghanistan. What good is it to fight in Afghanistan while his own country is being taken over by the muslims in city after city...? Harry is just a poseur who goes after easy glory when he should defend his country from invasion.

My respect goes to the EDL and BNP, the only ones doing anything to preserve the UK. Those are the real princes of Britain.

Sorry Freepers, IMO, Harry is the first royal in a long time who had gone to war and fought the enemy up close and personal. The fact that he went partying in Las Vegas is no different from any serviceman going on R&R after being on the front lines. His R&R activities are typical of millions of former servicemen and do not reflect on his character, no matter what was involved.

England could probably use a Henry VIII or Edward III right now. If someone doesn’t purge the anti-Western sentiment and restore nationalism, I fear the country does not have much longer.

Harry may be one of the few kings who actually earns the title.

I would think that old “King Hal” would’ve been awfully proud of him!

I would be a little careful making fun of his, what did you call him? “moron father”? Prince Charles is also a helicopter pilot, and I don’t believe a “moron” could learn to do that, could he? Would it really kill you to give him just a little credit? It’s not likely he would’ve ever been allowed to go into the combat zone, would he? (same goes for son, William)
