Rise of the Drones (PBS NOVA Wed Jan 23 9PM EST)
PBS/NOVA ^ | January 22, 2013 | Unattributed

Posted on 01/22/2013 3:41:46 PM PST by Seizethecarp

Meet a new breed of flying robots, from tiny swarming vehicles to giant unmanned planes. Airing January 23, 2013 at 9 pm on PBS.

Drones. These unmanned flying robots–some as large as jumbo jets, others as small as birds–do things straight out of science fiction. Much of what it takes to get these robotic airplanes to fly, sense, and kill has remained secret. But now, with rare access to drone engineers and those who fly them for the U.S. military, NOVA reveals the amazing technologies that make drones so powerful as we see how a remotely-piloted drone strike looks and feels from inside the command center.

See also this recent PBS/NOVA article claiming that the word “drone” summons “images of innocent civilians killed,” NOT images of Al Qaeda leaders killed...

“How Dumb Are Drones?”

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/tech/how-dumb-are-drones.html

“For many, the word “drone” summons images of innocent civilians killed in wars conducted from thousands of miles away and raises concerns about invasions of privacy. For others, a drone is simply a next-generation military weapon that saves both lives and money. And for still others, drones are a fascinating backyard hobby for adults and children alike. But no matter what you think about them, drones are here to stay. The Air Force predicts that within a decade nearly 30 percent of its attack and fighter planes will be drones. It’s not just the military that sees their potential, either. Drones are being used for humanitarian purposes such as search and rescue missions, environmental conservation, and forest fire detection.”

Or what about the drones that vote for the “cool” candidate and walk among us every day? Those are the most deadly variety.

They say you can’t see them or hear them.

They say they can’t be shot down.

But they have to take off and land from somewhere. Find that place.

Navy wants drones stashed on the seafloor

That concept was inevitable. A drone with one warhead and one torpedo on the seafloor for months and years. Make that dozens of drones on the sea floor. Virtually undetectable, indestructable, unstoppable. Called to duty by a simple signal or programmed to dive to half a mile and sit in ambush.
