Mayor Ed Lee is floating the idea of tearing down the stub end of Interstate 280 in San Francisco in hopes of creating a new neighborhood and speeding up the arrival of high-speed rail service downtown.
The idea, laid out by the mayor's chief transit planner, Gillian Gillett, in a memo to the regional Metropolitan Transportation Commission, would be to knock down I-280 before 16th Street - eliminating the ramps both at Sixth and Brannan streets and at Fourth and King streets. It would be replaced by a street-level boulevard akin to those built after the Embarcadero and Central freeways were knocked down.
The plan also calls for clearing out the adjacent rail yard to make way for a high-speed rail line.

WTF?
That’s my shortcut...
Good idea. Then knock down the Bay Bridge keep the rabble out of paridise.
How about levelling all of San Francisco and starting over again? Or enclosing SF like in “Escape from New York” and keep the red rats in?
I’m just waiting for the big earthquake to strike. That one is finally going to solve the problem, once and for all.
Conservativesm, get out now. It isn’t going to be pretty.
Sounds like a cargo cult. South Pacific islanders built shrines to C-47s to bring back the good times when the cargo was arriving. You do something to cause God or, in this case gods to bring something to you. The key here is theres no cause and effect relationship. Stopping the smooth, efficient traffic flow into SF will not bring about high speed rail. The reason the rail lines are being built in the nether regions first is right-of-way. The government could get the right-of-way out in the wild. But it cant get the right-of-way in populated areas. It cant now and never will. The many NIMBYs will see to that.
I don’t get these morons. The didn’t bother to rebuild The Embarcadero and now they want to pull down 280.
Ass hats must want to make SFO an island that is damned dufficult to traverse.
