Va. Republicans push through rewrite of Senate districts
Richmond times Dispatch ^

Senate Republicans this afternoon pushed through a surprise rewrite of the 2011 redistricting plan that erases a Democratic seat in western Virginia and creates a sixth majority black district that would be located between Petersburg and Danville. Democrats were shocked by the move, vowing to oppose the new plan in court.

he so-called re-redistricting plan was woven into House-passed legislation that makes technical adjustments to delegates' districts. The revised plan cleared the Senate on a party-line vote of 20-19. Missing this afternoon was Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, D-Richmond, who was in Washington for President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony. The new black-majority seat would be partly carved out of Marsh’s district. Sen. Richard L. Saslaw, D-Fairfax, the Democratic leader, reacted angrily to the move, saying "It's totally over on transportation."

So they created a Black Republican district?

Or is this more racist b!tching from racist Democrats who are upset that a White Democrat will be losing his seat to a Black Democrat?

The same scenario is what led the RACIST Chris Bell (D), a three time loser (Mayor, House, and Governor), to file "ethics charges" against Tom DeLay while Mr. Bell was on his way out of office.

The Republicans at the state level really have gotten aggressive in the last couple of years. And they've been rewarded for it. Maybe there is a lesson here for the Republicans in Washington DC.

It's the same lesson the NRA is teaching. Don't back down and punch back twice as hard - particularly at the media. They're the enemy. Defeat them and you defeat the Democrats.

I see the rodent whiners on the website bitching about how unfair it is. Gerrymandering is the premier Democrat weapon (and was their creation when early Massachusetts rodents tried to screw a Federalist majority out of seats).

It looks like Creigh Deeds is getting screwed by this. Poor guy can’t catch a break. (Heh Heh) Gets beaten for AG, beaten for Guv, and finally may lose his senate seat.

Try reading the article again. The redistricting turns one currently majority-white Dem seat into a majority black Dem seat and it turns another Dem seat Republican. The net? +1 GOP.

Get ‘em. Gut the Dems open and stomp their faces into the mud. Make them lose for a generation. No prisoners, no mercy.

The Senate Democrats did very well with their gerrymandering. In 2011, they managed to hold 20 out of 40 seats, while only getting slightly more than 40% of the total vote.

This is why in a state with 40 senate districts, I would have to drive 2 hours to go from one end of MY senate district to the other, and why my one county has something like 4 senate districts.

It took 140 years to break the Dem legislative gerrymander in TN (and they had ceased getting a majority of the vote almost 20 years ago). The GOP only got to draw the lines in 2012. The House of Cards gerrymander the Dems had built their seats on was so tenuous that they dropped from a majority to 30% of the seats in the House and 20% in the Senate in just two election cycles. A good chance, too, it will decline even further (in the State Senate, we have a 26-7 majority and 2 of those 7 seats are GOP-leaning districts).

Anything that really pisses off “Little Dickless Saslaw” can’t be all bad.

Now if only we can get Rep. Connelly (D-Fairfax), to get apopletic and have a stroke or heart attack. To quote Dirty Harry, that would really “Make my day”.

Hate that fascist piece of crap. He wrecked a once sane county.

I live in the ‘Rats nest of Alexandria (in order to escape Maryland).

Virginia has almost exactly 8 million people and 40 senate districts, meaning that each district should contain 200,000 people. Alexandria has 140,000 people; and neighboring Arlington has about 210,000 people. If the senate districts were sane and rational in this state, all of Alexandria would be in one district, along with 50,000 people in Fairfax County and the 10,000 people in Arlington who would not be included in an Arlington County district. Yet, Alexandria is divided among 3 separate senate districts (30, 35 and 39), and Arlington is also divided among 3 separate senate districts (30, 31 and 32). Thus, 5 different ‘Rats represent portions of either Alexandria, Arlington or both.

The ‘Rats carved up northern Virginia to make sure that no republicans could get elected up here, and they just about succeeded.

Gerrymandering is a disgrace. Both sides are 100 perceng guilty. I wish the would pass laws against it. They totally took our congressional district and split it five ways under 5 different districts to ensure our city does not have any representation. It is a travesty and should be stopped!! We will NEVER get rid of John Boehner because he has made his district so gerrymandered that he won by 99 percent of the vote in 2012. Even a conservative could not win because he is so entrenched.

I’d be a hypocrite if I said I didn’t support Republican/Conservative gerrymandering. I want to see as few Democrats as possible holding office. Drawing the districts that would give either party a shot in an area that could be made safely GOP is committing political suicide. Why ? Because right now, thanks to the Voting Rights Act, the Justice Department is legally empowered to force the drawing of Democrat districts at the expense of Republican voters (the sole exception is 3 seats in FL, of which the Dems won one in November, these being Hispanic Cuban districts). In order to ensure fairness to our side, we have no choice but to draw favorable lines to our guys.
