NOPD: 5 people shot in Central City where Martin Luther King Day parade had passed earlier
The Times-Picayune By NOLA.com
January 21, 2013 at 1:26 PM, updated January 21, 2013 at 2:23 PM

The New Orleans Police Department said that five people were shot in Central City on Monday afternoon. Police said that the shooting occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on the corner of LaSalle Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

The shooting occured near where the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade had passed some 30 minutes earlier. The shooting did not appear to be related to the parade, authorities said.

New Orleans Police Superintendent Ronal Serpas said that the shots were fired out of a white, two-door sedan that drove by a grocery store located near the intersection of both streets. Rapid shots were fired at a group of teenagers who were standing outside.

Five people were shot, Serpas said. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening. The car was seen fleeing down Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and disappeared into the surrounding neighborhood, Serpas said, adding that video surveillance would soon be made available to the public.

Let me guess, the shooters were law abiding citizens who had followed all the procedures to acquire a pistol permit or whatever LA requires.

If I was a relative of MLK, I'd demand cities stop naming streets after him.

If you ever see MLK Blvd in the news, it's never a good thing.

Were any of them wannabe rappers just looking to score some street cred so they can boast about how many times they’ve “got shot”?

(Livin’ the “Dream”)

As long as they were shot due to the content of their character and not the color of their skin, then the dream is still alive.

In ALMOST every city, MLK is a dangerous place.

I can however think of one, a relatively small place with a high African American population, where it’s not particularly dangerous.

We have a big problem in this country, and blaming Whitey for it isn’t going to solve it.
Unfortunately, in a country where you speak the truth and get fired, we are not likely to see any progress made in solving the problems.

There are no more *safe* zones in New Orleans than there are in Chicago.
If you visit New Orleans, you are not using situational awareness.

On a further note N.O. Police Superintendent Ronald Serpas is a big anti-gun advocate, has been running his mouth on local TV.

In that part of town, I'm surprised they held their fire long enough for the parade to pass.
