OK, raise your hands — how many of you are surprised by this? Governor Rick Perry gave Barack Obama a Texas-sized pushback on the new gun-control agenda at the White House:
“The Vice President’s committee was appointed in response to the tragedy at Newtown, but very few of his recommendations have anything to do with what happened there.
“Guns require a finger to pull the trigger. The sad young man who did that in Newtown was clearly haunted by demons and no gun law could have saved the children in Sandy Hook Elementary from his terror.
“There is evil prowling in the world – it shows up in our movies, video games and online fascinations, and finds its way into vulnerable hearts and minds. As a free people, let us choose what kind of people we will be. Laws, the only redoubt of secularism, will not suffice. Let us all return to our places of worship and pray for help. Above all, let us pray for our children.
“In fact, the piling on by the political left, and their cohorts in the media, to use the massacre of little children to advance a pre-existing political agenda that would not have saved those children, disgusts me, personally. The second amendment to the Constitution is a basic right of free people and cannot be nor will it be abridged by the executive power of this or any other president.”
The most notable part of Obama’s gun-control agenda is just how little of it has to do with Newtown, Aurora, or any of the other tragedies that the administration used to justify its sharp tack to the left on guns. Obama’s platform is also notable for its impotence, but we’ll have more on that later today.
For now, let’s pair up Governor Perry with perhaps a little more surprising voice for common sense. The Washington Post’s Courtland Milloy wrote yesterday about the connection between civil rights and gun ownership — not in the Revolutionary War, but within living memory of people who had to face armed terrorism designed to keep them from being truly free. The entire column is worth the read, but the lead is a grabber:
When Charles “Chuck” Hicks does the Martin Luther King Jr. Day peace and freedom walks Saturday, he’ll also be taking a step for what the National Rifle Association has dubbed “National Rifle Appreciation Day.” That’s because Hicks is the son of Robert Hicks, a prominent leader of the legendary Deacons for Defense and Justice — an organization of black men in Louisiana who used shotguns and rifles to repel attacks by white vigilantes during the 1960s.
“The Klan would drive through our neighborhood shooting at us, shooting into our homes,” recalled Hicks, 66, who grew up in Bogalusa, La., and has been a civil rights activist in the District for more than 35 years. “The black men in the community wouldn’t stand for it. You shoot at us, we shoot back at you. I’m convinced that without our guns, my family and many other black people would not be alive today.”
As one of the organizers for the weekend’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities, Hicks’s pro-gun stance may seem like something of an anomaly. But even though King may best be remembered for his philosophy of nonviolent protest, the fact is that black civil rights activists in many small towns throughout the South carried guns or received protection from groups like the Deacons for Defense and Justice. …
Infringe on the Second Amendment? No way, say 30 percent of African Americans (myself included), according to a recent Pew poll. No doubt many of them believe, like Hicks, that it’s better to have a gun and not need it than not have one and wish you did.
Indeed.
I wanna know what happened to the headline on Drudge that was taken down, that said Texas would arrest any federali coming into Texas to mess with gun rights. Perry sure didn’t mention it, and I didn’t read the story because I was unsurprised by the headline, and the headline said it all, and because, finally, Texas spoke up.
Now I don’t know quite what to think about that missing story, as I have been questioned about it’s existence.

I’m guessing Perry is not isolated from the news media and he wants to continue to be Gov.
If liberals were in a position where they might win, we would probably be seeing different positions from many of the “pro gun” politicians.

State Representative Steve Toth (The Woodlands) has begun the process to file legislation assisting the protection of the Second Amendment of the United State Constitution. The “Firearms Protection Act” bill would make any federal law banning semi-automatic firearms or limiting the size of gun magazines unenforceable within the state’s boundaries. Anyone trying to enforce a federal gun ban could face felony charges under the proposal.
“We can no longer depend on the Federal Government and this Administration to uphold a Constitution that they no longer believe in. The liberties of the People of Texas and the sovereignty of our State are too important to just let the Federal Government take them away. The overreach of the federal administrations executive orders that are do not align with the Constitution, are not very popular here in Texas,” said Representative Toth.
Along with Wyoming, Texas will lead the country in continuing to stand for the sovereignty to run Texas as Texans see fit while exercising the Bill of Rights Amendments 2 & 10 to “prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers… [to] extending the ground of public confidence in the Government.” Along with Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who has already filed over twenty-three suits against the Federal Government, Representative Toth will continue to stand with other Texans to encouraging the promotion of personal responsibility and liberties while actively guarding against outside parties attempting to erode the freedoms enjoyed by Texans so that the people of Texas may have more confidence in their government.

Steve Toth is the newly elected State Representative for District 15, which includes The Woodlands, Shenandoah, Imperial Oaks, Oak Ridge North and Benders Landing along with some of the surrounding areas. Although, if I may quibble, and admittedly read only the headline, when the headline says “TEXAS threatens....... “, one could assume certainly, that TEXAS threatens.

Although the Constitution states, "... no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States", there ought to be a firearms proficiency test for all candidates seeking office. The end result? A DemonRAT will never be qualified.
I’m glad Gov. Perry is speaking out, but it would be a heck of a lot better if President-elect Perry were saying this.
This rep. represents The Woodlands, that’s about 5 miles from me and it’s in my county, Montgomery County. I’ve said before Montgomery County has over 300,000 people and is about 95% Republican. So, it doesn’t surprise me this rep. wrote that bill. This county is gun county. We don’t take kindly to anyone messing with our guns.
If progressive policies actually solved problems, there would be no need for progressives.

Perry isn’t pro-gun for political reasons.
Trust me, I KNOW.
Perry has guns in his very guts. He was born and raised on it. He lives it. And it goes beyond hunting for sport, which as we know isn’t even what the Founding Fathers wrote the Second Amendment for. It was in support of a citizenry militia.
Remember the publicity when he was out running and had his young puppy with him, and a coyote suddenly appeared? He shot the coyote to protect his puppy.
I submit to you that if a person or persons had approached Perry in a threatening way while he was out running, he would have shot them.
IOW, guns for personal protection. A God-given right of self-defense. Written into the Constitution.
