The only drawback I can see is that the filter would block the sights making precision aiming impossible.

Nope, just blast the first hole. There is no problem. Done with an 556 with no problem.

That sounds pretty dangerous, firing into a closed container. If not for a .22, certainly for a larger caliber.

It's not a "closed contaier". The intake on an oil fiter is the threaded hole. The outflow is through holes between the center hole and the gasket. Those holes aren't blocked.

The problem with the oil can suppressors is that they blow out after only a few rounds from a high powered rifle.

wouldn’t the ATF consider screwing on a new oil filter a rebuild and throw you in the stony lonesome for 10 years?
