Rep. Israel to Introduce Legislation to Prohibit 3-D Printed High-Cap Mags Along w/ Plastic Guns

As Debate Stirs Around High-Capacity Gun Clips, Homemade Gun Enthusiasts Show Clip Can be Made At Home with 3-D Printer

Washington, D.C.— Today, Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) called for a renewal of a revamped Undetectable Firearms Act that includes the ban of 3-D printed, plastic high-capacity magazines. The existing ban on plastic guns expires this year and does not clearly cover magazines. This past weekend, Defense Distributed, a group of homemade gun enthusiasts used a 3-D printer to print and test an ammunition magazine for an AR semi-automatic rifle, loading and firing 86 rounds from the 30-round clip.

Rep. Israel said, “Background checks and gun regulations will do little good if criminals can print high-capacity magazines at home. 3-D printing is a new technology that shows great promise, but also requires new guidelines. Law enforcement officials should have the power to stop high-capacity magazines from proliferating with a Google search.”(continued)

What we really need are published templates to cut and form sheet metal into magazines. Some company could sell tempered springs; I doubt there is a law against springs, yet.

Are they going to make it a felony to own a 3d printer?
Will you have to register your 3d printer with the U.S Govt. dept. of Printing?
Banning the printing press worked great the last time.

Well, we will just truck along perfecting the technology with entirely legal mags that will be designed to be easy to extent should the need ever arise.

Marketing coup possibility: Can a NewYork-compliant 7 round AR magazine be the first to market???

Remind me how the Roman Empire felt about its subject peoples having the tools to make swords, spears and bows.

“3-D printing is a new technology that shows great promise, but also requires new guidelines.”

Don’t you just love how malleable and plastic the meaning of words is to a liberal (er, now “progressive”)?? But the “guidelines” are not suggestions, for if this fascist has his way, if anyone violates his “guidelines”, they might end up a felon. So liberal “guidelines” now come with men with guns. I see.

...gun enthusiasts...loading and firing 86 rounds from the 30-round clip.

What does this mean? Was it a 30 or 86 round mag they printed?

...revamped Undetectable Firearms Act that Rep. Israel wrote makes it illegal to manufacture, own, transport, buy, or sell any firearm or high-capacity magazine that is not detectable by metal detector and/or does not present an accurate image when put through an x-ray machine....

So his bill really has nothing to do with 3D printing a mag, it’s really about ALL mags that don’t show up on an x-ray machine.
Do OEM plastic mags show up on an x-ray?

Millions of men have the skills and the tools in their garage to make steel mags. Just buy 10 round mags, cut, splice and weld together. Spot weld the springs.

Congresscritters rarely realize that regular citizens built this country, the cars, the roads, the nuclear weapons for the military.... We're the ones that build that stuff. It doesn't come from some magic place.
