The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), which made the discovery, said the burgers were produced by two processing plants in Ireland, Liffey Meats and Silvercrest Foods, and Dalepak Hambleton in the UK.

In nine of the 10 burger samples from the four retailers, and from the Irish chain Dunnes Stores, horse DNA was found at very low levels. However, in one sample, from Tesco, the level of positive DNA indicated horsemeat accounted for 29% relative to the beef content.

Luke L, Yes, horse meat does taste good. I did not mean to eat it. I did not know I had eaten it. I thought I was eating a good grade of beef. Then I read in the paper that the meat market was raided and shut down for selling horse meat.

The article clearly states “horse DNA”.

Those burgers could be full of horse semen, not meat.

A man I knew said in WW2 the army fed them ‘corned beef’ but they later discovered that it was canned horse meat.
In the ‘80 he told me that he had stopped buying corned beef because it was horse meat, I asked him how he knew and he told me the above, well with in a month it was in the news that there was a recall of corned beef [from South America]....he was right... horse meat...

My brother's kids did and when he had it rendered into hamburger, they had a hard time eating "Buttercup"

Nothing wrong with horse. Had a delicious sirloin du cheval in Belgium a few years back. Very lean but flavorful.

Why would they do this when beef is less expensive? Reminds me of the absurd claims that Chinese restaurants cook cats. Nonsense, chicken is much cheaper and easier to get.

Of course it does. Your bovines (cow, elk, buffalo, etc.) are vegetarians, your equines (horse, etc.) are vegetarians

People who eat those animals are second-hand vegetarians.

I don't like eating carnivores (dogs, cats, wolves, fish, etc.), but I do occasionally stray onto the omnivores (pig being most notable).

I would like to say that I refuse to eat anything smarter than a politician, but then I’d be on a steady diet of nuts and berries.

There are some animals that I like so much that I won’t knowingly eat them, cattle is not one of them, horses are.

Those folks are gut eaters, so it shouldn’t be a big deal to them.

I am guessing but I imagine that it is the leg cartilage, guts and lungs. It would not be the roasts or filets.
