Cuomo Signs Gun Legislation Into Law

ALBANY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed into law on Tuesday a sweeping package of gun control measures, significantly expanding a ban on assault weapons and making New York the first state to change its laws in response to the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.

Mr. Cuomo signed the bill less than an hour after the State Assembly approved the legislation on a 104-to-43 vote. The State Senate approved the measure, 43 to 18, on Monday night.

The expanded ban on assault weapons broadens the definition of such weapons, banning semiautomatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines and one military-style feature, as well as semiautomatic shotguns with one military-style feature. New Yorkers who already own such guns can keep them but will be required to register them with the state.

I wonder how many "criminals" Cuomo just added with this new law. My guess is less than half of those weapons will be registered, even among those who are not felons or otherwise barred from owning firearms. I hope the numbers are FAR less. Some laws should be resisted - and refusal to obey is only one of the options for resisting this sort of grab for power. A secodn one is litigation, and I hope tens of thousands of New Yorkers will file lawsuits. This is clearly unconstitutional, and it needs to bog the system down until those in power admit that they overreached. Wealthy, productive, tax-paying New Yorkers could also leave, voting with their feet and their dollars. There are other options as well, but I will leave them to the imagination.

I am now officially a criminal

Our condolences, New Yorker.
There is land and jobs to be had in Texas.
Come. You have proven worthy.

Does that mean that Cuomo won’t be walking around with those armed guards anymore..I mean after all, guns are “evil” right Andrew..so that means you shouldnt have armed guards..perhaps they can guard you with twinkies

I wonder if that is constitutional. I hope the NRA challenges the legality of some portions of this law.

The proper response to this piece of tyranny is “No,” but that message must be delivered by large numbers of people around the Capitol and the governor. If people just don’t register their long guns, then the authorities have achieved a dream of criminalizing a large number of law abiding citizens and can arrest them at any time.

We hear some talk of Seccession but are not THESE
states breaking with the constitution by the nature
of their actions? They are in fact leaving the US.

Just something to consider.

Take three rounds out of that seven round magazine.

I need to bury some magazines in my walls, that a lot of Sheetrock work I don’t have time for at present.

Oh yay,,so per Cuomo’s logic all children in school are safe and we should expect a decrease in gun crime? What EXACTLY are these measures supposed to do?

Going to be interesting to see what happens once the Fudds find out that the law bans a lot of their precious duck hunting guns - it bars all semi-auto shotguns that have a FIXED magazine capacity of more than 7.

Many of them have 8 round tubes.

I wonder if they specified length of cartridge. I.E. If you have a shotgun that holds seven 3" shells, that same shotgun can hold 12 of these 1-3/4" "Minishells":

Aguila Minishell Ammunition 12 Gauge 1-3/4" #4 and #1 Buckshot 11 Pellets Box of 20 (Midway USA)

As dishonest as anti-gunners are, you KNOW if the shell length isn't specified, they'll jam shotguns full of these tiny shells, and promptly declare them illegal "assault weapons".

I heard Cuomo talk today about this travesty. I almost vomited. This state is no longer tolerable. The first job I find in a free state I am moving. I have resigned myself to take up to a 50% pay cut to leave. NY is making me physically ill.

There won’t be one fewer murder in New York City this year when compared to last year.

But the liberals (both democrat and republican) will feel all warm and fuzzy inside!

I don't understand why New Yorkers are sitting around eating this crap sandwich. Cuomo, the man that engineered the mortgage crisis, is leading the Communist charge to make criminals and victims of all honest gun owners. Cuomo try this in Texas or Mississippi and he'd be out of office tar and feathered within the week.
