As the worst drought since 1956 gripped the nation last year, lakes and ponds slowly receded, revealing decades worth of dropped and discarded fishing tackle, pop cans and all sorts of flotsam.

At Oak Lake in Lincoln, the debris included at least two guns.

A person walking along the edge of the lake last summer spied a suspicious item and called Lincoln police, who found a handgun rusted beyond recognition.

“That thing could have been in there for 50 years for all we know,” said Sgt. Ben Miller.

After that gun turned up, officers Kevin Hinton and Jen Mullendore couldn’t help but wonder what other secrets the mud may hold, Miller said.

They came up with a plan, and on Nov. 14, four members of Lincoln Police's Northwest Team spent 10 hours walking the exposed lake bed with metal detectors.

“We dug several hundred holes that day," Miller said. "Anything that was giving us a significant tone, we dug up."

Ninety percent of what they found was fish hooks and pop cans, he said.

Just think how many murders didn’t happen because that gun was at the bottom of the lake.

Hah! That's easy! Go to Colorado and look left! Or go to Iowa and look right!

Either one will get you to see Nebraska.

With all due respect, wouldn't those directions get you to either Utah or Illinois?
