NY Poised to Pass First Gun Bill Since Sandy Hook Shooting
NBC NY ^ | Jan 14, 2013 | Michael Gormley

Posted on 01/14/2013 12:08:01 PM PST by Tirian

A key New York Senate leader and the Assembly speaker said they expect the state Legislature to vote Monday to enact what would be the nation's first gun control measure following last month's Connecticut school shooting.

"I think when all is said and done, we are going to pass a comprehensive gun bill today," Sen. Jeffrey Klein told reporters Monday morning. "I'm very excited about it. I am very confident we are going to vote on a comprehensive bill that will be agreed on by the governor, the Senate and Assembly."

People familiar with closed-door negotiations told The Associated Press a tentative deal was struck over the weekend.

The tentative agreement would further restrict New York's ban on assault weapons, limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, down from the current 10, and enact more stringent background checks for sales. Other elements, pushed by Republicans, would refine a mental health law to make it easier to confine people determined to be a threat to themselves or others.

Senate Republicans also have included a further crackdown on illegal gun trafficking into New York, the people said. Most New York City gun crimes involve weapons illegally brought into the state, state and city officials say.

Most New York City gun crimes involve weapons illegally brought into the state scumbags who should have been in prison a long time ago.

There. Fixed it.

“Most New York City gun crimes involve weapons illegally brought into the state, state and city officials say.”

Of course this is true, everyone knows there are no guns in NYC.

I'd like to know how some brainiac came up with seven rounds as a limit.

(Posted previously re: Delaware, applies just as well here:)

Since this is being rushed through as a response to Sandy Hook, I'm sure they'll explain to the citizens of their state EXACTLY how these laws would have prevented the Sandy Hook killings, right?

I mean, if they wouldn't have stopped Lanza, then this would just be naked political opportunism, wouldn't it?

“I’d like to know how some brainiac came up with seven rounds as a limit. “

That “brainiac” is smarter than you think:

That is as close to a defacto semi auto gun ban as you can have with out coming right out and saying so.

Article says:
“I am very confident we are going to vote on a comprehensive bill that will be agreed on by the governor, the Senate and Assembly.”

But not the PEOPLE!

Closed Door session so they can't hear what the people say.

It's an outrage that the NY State Republicans are agreeing to this rushed bill that won't do a thing for stopping incidents such as Sandy Hook. It will only try to make felons of law abiding citizens that have exercised their right to keep and bare arms.

While I suppose it is callous, I do somewhat lack sympathy for gun owners in NY state. They already put up with very onerous nonsense. To expect it to end short of outright confiscation is fantasy. I imagine some of them can’t move for various reasons, but I never even considered looking for a job in that state because of the gun laws.

I beleive this is unconstitutional on a Federal level.
I beleive this is unconstitutional on a State level as it is in violation of the State Consititution .

This is another “Ram.., ..Bam , thank you Ma’m “ emotional legislative reaction to get Cuomo higher in the Dem’s list for potential candidates for the next Presidential election.
It is a sign of leadership failure .

"I think when all is said and done, we are going to pass a comprehensive gun bill today," Sen. Jeffrey Klein told reporters Monday morning.

Which will do absolutely NOTHING that the more than 10 thousand current state & local gun laws already on the books can't do.

But hey.....it feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeels good.

Can you elaborate? All mine hold more than 7, but you could make 7 shot magazines by plugging the bottom end. Most who have ever duck hunted have plugged their 5 shots to hold 3.

grew up here - wifes land has been in the family 50 years. The fishing and hunting is awesome and excepting the urban areas the state is tremendously red in the backwoods.....

sad part is that many have already lost their guns in boating accidents

All you people out there that think "something just has to be done to help stem the violence, blah blah blah"...had just better realize this. All those prescriptions you got for Ambien, Trazadone, or Valium, ANY painkillers at all, or Ritalin for your kids - anything that makes you drowsy, changes your mood, metabolism (e.g., diet pills) ARE going to be logged into Obama's ACA (AKA ObamaCare) medical database, and these freedom-taking bastards will disqualify you for Guns, and likely for many other things they find out they don't like.

You have been warned!

One problem right there. No open deliberations in front of "the people" with live mics and cameras rolling. Just deals struck in the shadows to be promptly sprung upon a disenfranchised citizenry. Tyranny.

Seeing as the Gestapo in the federal government use the interstate commerce clause to twist and distort the constitution at every turn then tell me why this ban is not a direct affront to interstate commerce?

Just ran into our local NRA rep in town and he told me that inside sources say that Cuomo’s bill is going to limit folks to 10 guns.

Waiting for his email and will post link when received.
