Skip to comments.Britain can no long afford to pay the extortionate cost of the welfare state

Britain cannot possibly afford its welfare state for much longer. Most people do not realize that state handouts (£207 billion [$334 billion] a year) mop up every penny we pay in income tax (£155 billion [$250 billion] a year). Everything else, the NHS, schools, transport, police, defense, interest on the debt (nearly £50 billion [$80.7 billion] a year, by the way) must be paid for by other taxes, including the vast sums raked in by so-called National Insurance, or by more borrowing.
As we are more or less bankrupt as a country, such generosity is not noble, but plain idiotic. Yet we will not stop doing it. Change is politically impossible.
The very idea that people should provide for themselves has become a horrible heresy, a barbaric view that no civilized person can hold. Well see. My own guess is that a hurricane of inflation will, over the next ten years, rip the welfare state up by the roots and leave us impoverished, diminished and baffled, wondering what happened to us.

Silly Brits, everyone knows the answer to a borrowing and spending problem is more borrowing and spending! Maybe you guys can mint a trillion pound coin, like our geniuses are pondering doing here.
Hell, we’re a half-step behind them. The two world superpowers....at different times in their history....reduced to this.
All because of leftist idiots, their leftist media sycophants, and drooling moochers in society who lack two brain cells to rub together.
We’ve been saying “I told you so!” for decades now.
Unfortunately, we will suffer as a result as well.
My guess too
And what comes after that?
The African communist scumbag Ubama is doing all he can to catch up.
If this continues as it seems it will England will become an impoverished, desolate and desperate place. The riots it suffered last year will become the norm and be much worse as those who were accustomed to being given what they wanted will take what they want with brutality and force. It’s a nightmare scenario a small island nation with a dis-armed populace will be hard-pressed to survive, let alone prevent. And there is only so far you can run from this kind of an outcome on an island such as Britain is.
The UK is about to get into a fight with a Thrid World nation. A rematch.
That will have political implications most cannot fathom...
Who knows. Civil war maybe?
Tax the rich!
Dems here say that will pay for everything.
The absolutely merciless correction. A maintenance determination phase in which lampposts are weight tested to determine if they need replacement.
Which one, Argentina?
Argentina’s military is in worse shape than the first time And hardly at all more modern.
The British already maintain sufficient forces in the Falklands to keep the Argentine Navy in port.
Lady Thatcher was right. The nanny state eventually runs out of OTHER PEOPLE’S MONEY. It’s going to be a real hoot when Barry and the ‘RATS turn that 30 million illegal aliens into U.S. citizens with their under the cover of darkness amnesty plan. I’m seeing nothing but hard times ahead for Americans.
I’ve generally enjoyed Peter H’s writing a lot more than I did those of his late brother Christopher.
Interesting line towards the bottom of the page:
“Sorry we are unable to accept comments for legal reasons.”
The mooches can only survive as long as the productive are working to pay for the mooching.
Once the mooches kill the golden goose, guess what happens?
No more mooching, and you can burn all the cars and houses you want, but it will make the mooching even harder.
Maybe they can whip the grocer to give them food, but the grocer will at some point refuse to be whipped any more.
They invented the welfare state back with the original Queen Elizabeth!
Let them join and then tax the sh!t out of them. If they stay - that's money in the bank, if they go - bye bye.
Greece, if they’re lucky.
