Marco Rubio: Riding to the Immigration Rescue
WSJ ^ | Saturday Jaunary 12, 2013

Marco Rubio, Florida's GOP senator, unveils his reform ideas to 'modernize' the system and put illegal immigrants on a path to citizenship.

Marco Rubio—41-year-old son of working-class Cuban exiles—has lived the upwardly mobile immigrant experience. In his fast rise, the Florida Republican has also experienced the politics of immigration

[....]

"Here's how I envision it," he says. "They would have to come forward. They would have to undergo a background check." Anyone who committed a serious crime would be deported. "They would be fingerprinted," he continues. "They would have to pay a fine, pay back taxes, maybe even do community service. They would have to prove they've been here for an extended period of time. They understand some English and are assimilated. Then most of them would get legal status and be allowed to stay in this country."

No. Once a FReeper has taken a handle, it is forever “already in use,” banned or not.

Joining you in the “To:” field are banned FReepers’ handles and one dog, none nuked.

I really like the dog, too.

Afraid not. I’m very happily married, over 33 years, and I don’t date, let alone stand up my friends. Maybe you’re thinking of Old Lady?

Don’t confuse me. I’m an old lady!

Thank you for your good-natured reply to my failed attempt at some kind of humor, my second botched attempt on FR this weekend.

Never been to Amarillo. (Not for Marie or anybody else}.

Oh! Hi, easty! I thought you got the zot, after asking for it on your opus thread, and went to the other site. I was sad but didn’t realize that you were only suspended. It’s nice to see you again.

Are you coming to the shoot?

You didn’t fail at humor at all. I was too deadpan, I guess, but I was giggling the whole time I answered you and should have added, “[giggles].” Not your fault, and besides, you’re a nice guy.

Sarah supports a pathway to legalization.

Your posting history is muddled to say the least. ZOT was good for you.

UH, it has nothing to do with purity.
It has everything to do with basic “Will you uphold the COnstitution, yes or no.”
RINOs do not and will lie to your face.
Look at the GOP at the moment, can you with a straight face claim they are upholding the Constitution?
Can you with a straight face say McCain, or Romney were EVER Conservative or upheld the Constitution?

There are indeed folk to whom basic Conservative principles are, as you say, "in their bones." But this is not the case with most Americans. We have to try to persuade those who are only Conservative on some issues, to come to our side on other major issues. We have our work cut out for us, and none of us should be too proud to do what we can.

My point with respect to Senator Rubio, is relevant not only for Rubio, but for any citizen who is confused as to his duty or position, with respect to any foreign origin. You surely do not want to simply write off all who are influenced by such considerations, or by the distortions in the mass media, to seek to change our culture--either intentionally or otherwise!

Again, please consider my points in Whither American Conservatism.

And let me say this about Senator Rubio's worth. He is better at explaining Conservative economics than well over 95% of those in Congress. Just writing him off, because he has allowed family sentiment to influence him in the wrong direction on immigration, is a form of shooting ourselves in the foot.

Nice dream, but... I think the time has long been passed when immigrants were coming here to assimilate.

It looks like Marco is trying to hold on to conservatives and grab a piece of the hispanic vote at the same time.

One of the reasons that Rubio won in Florida has nothing whatever to do with immigration. He is one of the most articulate spokesmen for free market economics that we have.

I certainly do not dispute--nor do I take likely your points--that he has been on the other side on immigration issues. Ultimately, there is no issue that is more important. Every nation, every tribe or community's culture reflects the people of that nation, tribe or community. People create their culture; not culture people. Jefferson understood this, when he purchased Louisiana, specifically as a buffer for the Anglo/Celtic cultures of the eastern seaboard States. (See Immigration & The American Future.)

All of this said, I believe that we should at least try to reach Senator Rubio. Anyone's stand on any issue ultimately depends on what he focuses on. Senator Rubio is worth a serious effort to have him refocus on what is essential to the rooted American Conservative.
