Holland is the biggest city in very-red Ottawa County (West Michigan). Unfortunately, the largest newspaper tries real hard to be "hip" - which to them means liberal. The editorial staff does not represent the folks in the community. Of course there is a very vocal leftist-minority in the area.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Holland. I am surprised at the poll numbers, as it did indeed seem very red. The smoked porkbelly sandwich I had at their microbrewery made me think I had died and gone to Valhalla.

OK, the sandwich and beer is not relevant. I just can’t think of Holland without that coming to mind. That town is a gem in so many ways.

It’s a great place to live, work and raise a family.
I know the brewery. I love their guiness-like beer. And the owner is active in conservative/libertarian politics.
The paper caters to the progressives though. Us on the right either don’t buy it, or choose the Grand Rapids Press.

Jack’s coffeeshop is as fantastic as the brewery. I meant to get to the other one but did not have time, and also wanted to see the old Reformed church but it was closed. This means a return trip is in order. I find that I like Michiganders generally, and look forward to encountering Yoopers in the tundra someday.
