The Taliban, which harbored al Qaeda in Afghanistan in the lead up to the 9/11 attacks on America in 2001, will have an office in Afghanistan and engage in direct talks with the democratic government there, President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai affirmed at a joint White House news conference Friday.

“Ultimately security gains must be matched by political progress, so we’ve recommitted our nations to a reconciliation process between the Afghan government and the Taliban,” Obama said. “President Karzai updated me on the Afghan government’s road map to peace, and today we agreed that this process should be advanced by the opening of a Taliban office to facilitate talks.”

Karzai agreed this would be an important step for the peace process.

“What Bizzaro earth have I landed on?”

The same one we landed on at Tet. We beat their ass so THEY WON. Nothing changes. Only the places, faces, and names. And sometimes, not even that.

Why isn’t the word “satire” in the keywords? Please tell me that’s an oversight. Oh nevermind, I know it isn’t, but couldn’t you just humor an old woman? Where are we going, and how did we get in this hand basket?

I thought I heard Karzai say that the Taliban would establish an office in Doha, Qatar and that the Afghans would negotiate with them there. Did I hear wrong?

Islamic extremists are part of the admnistration, up in the double digits.

This is all part of Obama’s master plan, don’t fight the terorists, talk to them.

It’s all part of the plan of The Man Behind The Curtain, Valerie Jarrett—Muslim Brotherhood bigshot.

She is Obama’s CLOSEST and most important “advisor.”

She is calling the shots, and Obama knows he has to obey.

3. Is any House Republican going to speak out against this craziness? Impeach the SOB!

Yawn. I'm so tired of this from the whining class here. What grounds for impeachment? To what end? The Senate would never vote to remove and, Heaven forbid they did! Do you want a President Biden?

I find this disturbing and wonder if it'll end up like WWI, "the war to end all wars" by setting the stage for future instability. I figured in twenty years' time we'd have some sense of W took the right path after 9/11. I may have been too optimistic on how quickly clarity would come.

The Taliban are sort of like free will baptists. They may not be anything like the majority and their views and religious thoughts are not held by the country, but there are a lot of them. They are pretty much ingrained in the society and are difficult to completely remove. It is unlikely they can be eradicated.

Additionally, within the group, there is not uniformity. The group of believers is not homogeneous. This fact is shown by the number of congregations. Some get mad and irritated enough to go down the street or across town and establish a new church.

The effort to establish a framework for talks with those who possess some rationality is a reasonable approach. It seems certain they have announced their rational thoughts and intentions. With such a split, it is reasonable to think that the power structure formerly in existence has been broken. The hair on fire radicals might very well be dead and gone and their power severely diminished. .

No, it’ll be the moderate Muslims and women/girls who will bear the brunt of this idiotic policy. We’ve wasted all that blood and treasure only to turn on our “allies” and depart.

The Left loves a lie and hurts all it touches.

As with Islam in general, e.g., a majority does not conform to the extreme lifestyle or thoughts... however, it only takes those few to maintain the same level of violence they predicate upon Afghan society(s).

For people to want to be rationale there should be some preconditions, just as the military had several plans for the same battles in the Cold War ear with the USSR. Putting an Airborne Battalion into a mountain pass and telling them they have to hold for 24-36 hours against Soviet Armor and Infantry until reinforcements arrive, or be nuked because a breakout is unacceptable is one type of ultimatum that should (not can) be given at the beginning of negotiations. To continue to allow Democrats to politically give away tactical gains to the enemies of the US Military has only served to embolden our Nations enemies to never seek a solution on the battlefield and resort to terrorism. Had we decided it was militarily feasible to destroy the societies as was always the case in the world's history until the past 250 years, then we would not suffer from our own compassion.

This sort of liberal get along together and take care of everyone at the same time has really shaped the world in which we live. Sometimes a guy like Mao, Stalin or Obama comes along and destroys everyone in his path in order to bring about a new order....

I understand the concept you put forward and won’t deny it’s validity.

The unknown is how has the Taliban been weakened in the recent years of fighting?

There has not been a war in the real sense. There have been a series of lopsided skirmishes. While we have had casualties, the numbers are slight and in fact trivial when compared to the gang wars actually being fought with guns in the American cities.

Simultaneously there has been a conscious and I think successful effort to exterminate the leadership. They are a known quantity, citizens in neighborhoods, and they must live among st the people. I perceive success at eradicating them.

You are precisely correct when noting preconditions. I would think the meeting in Qatar, the military capital of the GCC, would specifically be established to convey and to receive just such preconditions.

At any rate, there is a necessity and perhaps even a duty to receive those wanting to have discussions to learn what they have on their minds. Discussions between combatants are as old as war.

Yeah. Long past time to get out of that quagmire. When you commit to ending a war with a guerilla enemy by opening up an “Office of complaints by Crazy, Retarded Religious Zealots”. We should have departed this pit many years ago.
