Obama, Karzai Call for “Taliban Office” in Afghanistan

The Taliban, which harbored al Qaeda in Afghanistan in the lead up to the 9/11 attacks on America in 2001, will have an office in Afghanistan and engage in direct talks with the democratic government there, President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai affirmed at a joint White House news conference Friday.

“Ultimately security gains must be matched by political progress, so we’ve recommitted our nations to a reconciliation process between the Afghan government and the Taliban,” Obama said. “President Karzai updated me on the Afghan government’s road map to peace, and today we agreed that this process should be advanced by the opening of a Taliban office to facilitate talks.”

Karzai agreed this would be an important step for the peace process.

Iran has been identified as the #1 state sponsor of terrorism for many decades; they’ve declared war on us over and over and we didn’t act. Nothing was done about them, so the problem spread across many other countries. Now it’s in Egypt, and it’s starting to grow in Ethiopia. If we pull back to our own borders, then they will follow us there. Bad enough that a “pre-9/11 mentality” has already been identified in the thinking at DC. We surely didn’t wait for Germany to attack us on home soil—as soon as they declared war on us after Pearl Harbor, off we went to meet them in Europe.

There is never been a lasting peace in Afghanistan, what will probably happen is Karzai’s government will collapse and the Taliban will return to the territory they controlled circa 9/11.

While remnants of the old government return to the old Northern Alliance frontier. What is idiotic is that our soldiers are still getting killed, still getting in trouble and still being lectured on absolute bs on how to treat the locals.

They will not leave us alone

Staying in Afghanistan or leaving will not determine whether these animals will leave us alone. IMHO

I agree with your first couple sentences, but you didn’t answer any of the questions I asked.

Well, you asked where does it end, so the only way to answer that was to identify where it began at the very least, that being Iran. Take out Iran and the rest of them will be severely weakened. But that seems to be the untouchable country on any president’s list.

All depends on what we do if we stay. Running will not make them say “OK, time to leave the Great Satan alone, they’ve had enough” . . .

True ... turn Afghanistan into a sea of glass would be the only thing that would quite the taliban down, however the taliban had nothing to do with 9/11.

Islamist will be forever targeting the US and our presence in Afghanistan will do nothing to deter them.

It is impossible for negotiate with Muslims as they are all part of the same evil cult. (Yes, Islam is not a legitimate religion, because it is not a religion.) It does not matter if the Afghan government has an office or the Taliban has an office. Tell me exactly how this will help the interests of the United States.

Our problems with terrorists are solved in one way only; by killing every last one of them. I remember 9/11 and I AM STILL PISSED.

Great idea. They should have tried that with Japan and Germany in the closing days of WW2. That generation of leaders were much smarter than the current ones, so it would have stood a better chance of success.

At the House hearings on Benghazi last year Eric Nordstrom, former regional security officer for the U.S. mission in Libya, said the administration's refusal to provide adequate security resources for Benghazi caused him to think he was dealing with the “Taliban.”

“I said, ‘Jim, you know what makes it most frustrating about this assignment? It's not the hardships. It's not the gunfire. It's not the threats. It's dealing and fighting against the people, programs, and personnel who are supposed to be supporting me,” Nordstrom said. “’For me, the Taliban is on the inside of the building.”

He was right. The Taliban have been in the White House for four years.

People tried to inform others these wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were absolute bull cheet as trillions were being spent on what was billed, "Compassionate" war, at the cost of thousands of dead Americans....Compassion for everyone but them.

I recall first hearing the term "compassionate war", thinking, what kind of bullcheet is this?

After spending multiple trillions, WTF did we win?

We didn't even win cheap gas for cripes sake.
