We are raising a generation of deluded narcissists
Fox News ^ | 8 January 2013 | Dr. Keith Ablow

A new analysis of the American Freshman Survey, which has accumulated data for the past 47 years from 9 million young adults, reveals that college students are more likely than ever to call themselves gifted and driven to succeed, even though their test scores and time spent studying are decreasing.

Psychologist Jean Twenge, the lead author of the analysis, is also the author of a study showing that the tendency toward narcissism in students is up 30 percent in the last thirty-odd years. This data is not unexpected. I have been writing a great deal over the past few years about the toxic psychological impact of media and technology on children, adolescents and young adults, particularly as it regards turning them into faux celebrities—the equivalent of lead actors in their own fictionalized life stories.

On Facebook, young people can fool themselves into thinking they have hundreds or thousands of “friends.” They can delete unflattering comments. They can block anyone who disagrees with them or pokes holes in their inflated self-esteem. They can choose to show the world only flattering, sexy or funny photographs of themselves (dozens of albums full, by the way), “speak” in pithy short posts and publicly connect to movie stars and professional athletes and musicians they “like.”

Go and read this article. It's is right on target. I've seen this face to face in the public schools. Students actually believe they have knowledge and skills just because they say so. Anyone who contradicts them puts them in a rage.

They have been told that if they purport 2+2=5,
it is correct.

They have been told they are ALL “A” students.

This is obviously one of the logical ends.

Exactly. And when I tried to teach them the truth, students are parents became outraged. We as teachers were supposed to tell them they were all okay.

Have you ever seen, on these pages, a home schooler who had "average" student/children or, heaven forbid, below average? I haven't. They are all several grades above the norm.

"They have been told that if they purport 2+2=5"

Well, 2+2=5 must be true because I read it here on the internet.

The kids today that are in the “Gifted programs” are exactly the same as the students 20 yrs ago in regular ED classes - with no special skills - just average students...then again, most students today lack basic respect, world knowledge, and current affairs - but they know how to turn on a game console and twit...pretty sad!

I believe this is much more a result of the misguided “self-esteem” movement which is taught in the schools and society at large. The “everyone gets a trophy” mentality despite the fact not everyone has earned it or put in the work to achieve it. Thus, kids have an incredibly inflated sense of their abilities and worth and futher have a complete entitlement mentality that they deserve whatever “trophy” they want in life just for being wonderful little them.

If you surveyed 100 young black women and asked if they were independent, free thinkers, you would get 100 responses in the affirmative. But ‘yes’ probably wouldn’t suffice. You would hear ‘absolutely,’ ‘you bet’ and ‘without a doubt.’

If you then asked why 98 of the 100 exercised their freedom of thought by voting for Barack Obama, it’s doubtful you would get such forceful, unambiguous replies. In fact, you would probably get at least 80 nearly identical responses.

This narcissism is reflected in the craze for tattoos. Their owners declare ‘This is an expression of me! They represent my life!’ When asked how they created the designs, many would say - without any sense of irony - ‘Oh I chose it from a book they had at the studio.’

The darkest side of the narcissism industry is, tragically, events like Newtown. Adolescent boys who discover they are NOT unique and attractive to all, especially the females, suffer sudden and severe blows to the ego. The mind has been left so unprepared for this wave of negative feedback and psychological pain that it displaces it in the form of rage, hostility, and in the worst cases, violence.

As a matter of fact, studies show home schooled students consistently score higher than public school kids.

Doesn't address my question or point.

Have you ever seen, on these pages, a home schooler who had "average" student/children or, heaven forbid, below average?

Some must be average and some must be below average and some must be above average or there wouldn't be an "average", unless they were all exactly the same.

If you give them all As, then they ARE all A students.

Exactly right. Saw this in students also.

“The everyone gets a trophy mentality”.

I agree and the school system pushes it further. For example, schools push less than bright students to take honor and AP courses in high school. They don’t care that the kid can’t do that type of work.. the concept is that the school system looks “good” because the classes are diverse. Even in elementary and middle schools, the bright kids learn very quickly that hard work gets you very little. They learn to do “just a little bit more” to get an “A” rather than pushing themselves to their fullest potential. Even in gifted programs, the school will select applicants so the classes look “diverse” and “equal” (not only with races but boys vs girls). It is no wonder that kids think they are “so smart”.. they’ve been told that over and over.

The idiotic self-esteem movement in schools for the past 20 some years hasn't helped either.

My sister and I disagree on this so much. She blames alot of the problems on people not having good self-esteem. I say that the problems of the younger generation is having TOO MUCH self-esteem.

Bring back those forbidden words: guilt, shame, humility.

No, they are being taught that if the Party says 2+2=5, it is correct.

And perhaps you might pretend, afterwards, that it was only a trick and that you just said it to make them stop and didn’t really mean it. But that isn’t true..

I work with a person like this.

If she has heard OF something, she thinks she knows ABOUT it!!

There’s NO scholarship or intellectual rigor to back this up... she just KNOWS it!!

To increase the illusion of knowing something about which she is dumb as dirt, she always talks LOUDLY and puts herself forward… interrupting conversations and imposing on situations where her ‘input’ is unnecessary and unsolicited.

People around here think she is wonder woman. Uggh..

Unfortunately, this behavior is everywhere. The days of getting a proper education, learning from experience and long practice, speaking when spoken to and observing the basic rules of civility are GONE!

Working with these young puppies who don’t know s&^% from shinola about ANYTHING is difficult and getting worse.

Being coarse and overbearing, WITHOUT knowing a f’n thing seems to pay off.

It worked for “O” and the crowd that supports him.
