Nixon at 100: A model for GOP?
CNN ^

Wednesday is the 100th anniversary of Richard Nixon's birth. He remains a controversial figure, and not just on the political left. Last year, I was covering the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington when I came across a stall selling old political pins. Unable to resist, I bought one with a picture of Tricky Dick giving his best crocodile smile beneath the classic slogan "Nixon's The One!"

True.

Also Nixon was a lawyer. I think somewhere there’s a good book that looks that presidents in the context of what they did prior to becoming president.

Lincoln was a lawyer and that surely informed his view of the world. Wilson was an egghead prof. Obamugabe was a community organizer. Eisenhower was a general. And so on and so on.

I suspect that Nixon erred in seeing Watergate in a lawyerly fashion when he should have viewed it as an existential threat.

McCarthy had nothing to do with HUAC, McCarthy was a Senator, not a Congressman. That is a mistake that the left has perpetuated over the years, blaming the abuses of the HUAC on McCarthy, and there were abuses, many of them created by Democrats.

My grandfather was accused of being a communist by the CIO and referred to the HUAC. Nothing came of it because he wasn’t a communist, but the investigation continued for years, until his death and just about destroyed him, but that was the purpose.

The CIO had tried to kill my grandfather after he was elected to be the first CIO president at RCA because the CIO was afraid of him, afraid that he wouldn’t blindly follow union leaders on racial hiring policies and other union tactics. They tried to get him moved to management, but he turned that down, so the CIO had him run down as he stood on the curb in front of his home, waiting to cross the street.

RCA responded to the attack on my grandfather by closing the plant and moving to Indiana without the CIO. The people of Camden county responded by electing my grandfather to the NJ State Assembly. The CIO responded by accusing by grandfather of being a communist.

Nixon did dozens of stupid things. The left hated him because they were all gung-ho on pulling out of Vietnam, and he didn’t do it fast enough for them.

If he had simply left Vietnam right away instead of dragging his feet and THEN pulling out, it would have done far less damage over the succeeding years than founding the EPA and his other left-wing conciliations.

Vietnam wasn’t Nixon’s fault. JFK and LBJ left him a terrible mess. JFK had a habit of starting wars he didn’t intend to win (Eisenhower’s advice), beginning with the Bay of Pigs. And LBJ micromanaged the war to lose. But the left hated Nixon because they could blame it on him.

The CIO was actually the CIOA before joining with the AFL and becoming the AFL CIO. My grandfather was elected to be the first and last president of the Electrical workers and machinists union at RCA.

In 1880, my gg-grandfather lived in the same tenement in the Lower East Side of Manhattan with Samuel Gompers, founder of the AFL.
My gg-grandfather was a barrel maker, and Gompers was a cigar maker.
Don't know if they knew each other but I wouldn't be surprised if they shared a brew, a stoggie and talked politics.

No, Nixon was amoral and governed like a liberal Democrat. It’s no wonder Commie nuthouse Network thinks he should be a Republican role model.

Sadly, Nixon is the Role model for the GOP post-Reagan.

He’s also the best example I can think of to point out that moving left for votes is a failed strategy. Won the battle, but lost the war. Other than airlifting some arms to Israel, he accomplished nothing of lasting importance, and did more than enough damage to the party and the country to offset that one bright spot.

If only Goldwater had won...

Democrats hated Nixon because he co-opted their ideas????

How old are you? You have no idea what you are talking about. No it’s not being a purist, it’s pure bs.

Richard Nixon faced rabid democrat attacks, he mobilized hardhats against the left, Washington DC was swamped by hundreds of thousands of demonstrators protesting his war policies.

It’s just so ignorant and so out of synch with reality to say Nixon was a liberal or that the democrats just hated him for stealing all their ideas. Nixon was reelected in a landslide over George McGovern who was a far left liberal democrat. He was destroyed by liberal democrats who then brought disaster upon SouthEast Asia.

Nixon was a tough ass and a conservative one. He appealed to the great silent majority, he hated the liberal elites, the liberal press.

Whatever.
