EXCLUSIVE: Cuomo Close To Announcing Sweeping New Gun Control Laws
CBS ^ | Jan. 8, 2013 | Staff

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A deal to give New York one of the toughest gun control laws in the nation is being negotiated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who, sources said Tuesday, is hoping to announce the plan Wednesday during his State of the State speech in Albany.

Cuomo hopes to jump-start the 2013 legislative session with a big deal that could dramatically alter gun control laws across the state.

Highly placed sources told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer that Cuomo is negotiating with Assembly and Senate leaders for a package of gun control laws that would be a dramatic response to the gun violence besetting the nation, including the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

“It’s a very divisive topic,” Cuomo said on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of energy on both sides. Some people are vehemently against’ some people think we’re out of our minds for not passing it.”

Sources told Kramer the governor and lawmakers are negotiating furiously in the hope that Cuomo can announce a deal during his speech Thursday.

Sources said the package is expected to include:

* New restrictions on assault weapons

* Stiffer penalties for using a gun to commit a crime

* New limits on the number of bullets in a gun magazine

“Gun control is highly political, politically contentious situation. It is polarizing,” Cuomo said.

In Westchester County, where Mamaroneck’s Hommocks Middle School was under lockdown last week amid reports a gunman tried to enter the school, the need for gun control is on the minds of many.

“There’s just too many incidents that are happening that you think could be avoided if there were stronger regulations about it,” one mother from Larchmont said, adding when asked if her children’s safety is her motivation, “Absolutely, I mean you can’t even send them to school now. Now my kids have police in front of their school. I mean you wonder how far it’s going to go.”

“I think it’s necessary with everything that’s happening,” Mamaroneck resident Gail Nubile added. “With the recent things that have been going on it does make you think that things to be happening, so you have to be extra cautious.”

Cuomo’s move comes as Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Gun Violence released a new commercial to push for federal action. It features the mother of Christina Taylor-Green, who was killed two years ago Tuesday in the Tucson, Ariz., massacre.

“How many more children must die before Washington does something to end our gun violence problem?” the ad says.

It would be quite a coup for Cuomo, a potential 2016 presidential candidate, to show progress on gun control while Washington dithers.

I hear that Cuomo plans to run for president in 2016 if Hillary is not in good health.

I don’t hear a word about the guns on the street. This is blatantly against law abiding citizens. They are going to do this one state at a time..state government doing the feds’ bidding .. and if no one stops it in NY, they will go to the next one. No one stops it at the next one.. they figure they are home free. Where is the outcry? Where is the refusal? They make the laws and then wait for a citizen to use a gun? Do they expect to have the guns turned in? Do they expect the local police to go house to house?

Liberals are all about “Protecting children” yet they are the ones advocating the murders everyday of the unborn..in fact, celebrating their deaths..they saw Newtown as a goldmine for sure..a way to get their agenda passed..liberals are all about exploiting a crisis for their own agenda..and their agenda is to abolish the 2nd Amendment, it always has been

“It is polarizing,” Cuomo said.

That is exactly the reason that Obama picked this issue at this time. Pushing gun control keeps his base in line behind him for all the other battles that he plans to fight. Obama knows that he doesn’t have a mandate to ruin the economy, raise taxes and push Obamacare costs, but as long as he keeps demagoguing gun control, he’s got a winning issue with the “low information” voters.

Take guns away from the good guys and leave the schools defenseless “gun free zones”.

Now there’s a recipe for disaster right there.

Morons.

If he resigns in order to run, at least New York will be shut of him. But only if he loses the Presidency. If he wins, watch out. You also have to find all of his horcruxes and destroy them without him twigging, or he’ll come back, just like last time.

“Too stupid to vote.”

Yet she does. There are many more like her and we know who they voted for. Of course, there are all of the phantom voters too.

Yet again, a list of ‘solutions’ that would not have prevented the tragedy they’re exploiting to push their agenda through. Gosh, must be a liberal idea, as it is completely and utterly disconnected from the issue at hand.

The law already exercises far more control over firearms than Andrew Cuomo can exercise over his own reproductive urges.

Why someone so outside the mainstream can be considered some sort of leading voice of the Democrats is beyond all understanding.

Andy, didn't St.Paul teach that if you can't deal with it cut it off?

lp boonie~: “ This whole thing is a mental health issue and not a firearms issue. Keep the crazies off the street and your kids will be safer. Keep the crazies on the street and disarm the citizens and we are all in trouble.”

You spoke of the missing key that ALL the media and police investigations have OVERLOOKED !! ~ we no longer isolate the potential killers on medications , society wants to “Mainstream “ them, put them back in the community.
They close all the psychiatric hospitals , and then wonder how this slaughter occurs.

As much as the moderators don’t like WMD.com , they have an excellent article on all the “mass murderers “ and the psychiatric /psychotrophic medications that the mass killers were taking.
The correlation is striking !! .. and thoght provoking
ALL the killers were either on medications , ..or were supposed to be taking psyhiatric medications.

The problem isn’t the guns !
The problem is all the crazies mainstreamed in their communities .
This is a “feel good “ , ‘knee-jerk ‘ reaction that the Dems are good for , .. especially if you want to run for President.

Probably not even while she was attending the community college where she struggled to get C’s in sociology and hoped to land a husband.
