Georgia Power asked state regulators for permission to shut down 15 power plants yesterday, claiming new regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) make the plants too expensive to run.
The 15 coal-, oil- and natural gas-fired power plants currently produce 2,061 megawatts (MW) for Georgia energy consumers. Georgia Power plans to close 11 of the plants on the exact day the EPAs new mercury regulations are set to take effect, April 16, 2015. Georgia Power will seek waivers from the EPA to keep four of the other plants open for a single year, and then shut those down too on April 16, 2016. It is unclear how the Georgia energy sector will make the 2 gigawatts up.
The EPA claims its new mercury regulation will produce $140 billion in annual benefits, but only $6 million of the benefits come from actual mercury reductions. According to Dr. Anne Smith, Senior Vice President of NERA Economic Consultings Global Environment Group, effectively all of the EPAs estimated benefits come from coincidental reductions of fine particulate matter. But fine particulate matter is already regulated by a separate section of the Clean Air Act.
The plant closures will cause at least 480 fewer power plant jobs and higher electricity rates for all Georgia energy consumers.

To all those in Georgia who voted for nobama, DIMs, LIBs and like a-holes...BwahahahahashahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
$140 billion in annual benefits
What would those benefits be?
One Obama promise he is keeping:
He promised to make coal and oil fired power plants too expensive to operate and he is doing exactly that.
I can’t help it, I keep thinking that sooner or later Obama and his thugs are going to stick the wrong group in the eye!
This is going on all over the country. If you think there won’t be power outages and power shortages you live in a dreamworld. We are planning for an alternative energy system in the very near future.
500 families lost their jobs. This doesn’t count the coal that won’t be mined, the trains that won’t carry it, etc. Those lives wrecked by the Kenyan communist bastard.
Today in the Ruhr B-17s and B-24s of the 8th Air force successfully destroyed 15 German power plants. The plan is that it would cause shortages, and further cripple German industry.
What would have been a very successful 8th Air Force air raid in WWII against the enemy, is now just a day’s work for Obama. He is a domestic enemy.
Actually, you can blame THE BARACK in Georgia located in Fulton County, Dekalb County, in the cities of Atlanta, Smyrna (full of illegal Mexicans), Macon, Columbus, etc. pretty much anywhere there is a THE BARACK mayor.
Regardless of that unfortunate fact, Georgia did on whole go against and outnumber THE BARACK.....
It’s going to cost a lot more than 480 jobs when the ripple effects are considered.
Reap what you sow.
Why don’t they just convert all the plants to natgas? That way they can sidestep the mercury AND AGW regs, and quite possibly continue to produce affordable electricity.
That’s what I would try to do if I were running their show.
It seems that the “..alternative energy system in the very near future” for the folks in our state of Georgia will be lots of flashlight batteries. Progress via the EPA back to the 19th century, wood stoves, candles, steam engines & crank telephones.
Costs upwards of 100 million to convert a plant to gas, and fuel costs go up too. Of course, there is an extensive licensing process.
Very expensive whe there is no economic of physical reason that it must be done in the first place.
It’s all part of the Obama plan. He said this would happen when he ran for President. This will only please the relatively small group of environmental fanatics. And the closings will get no news coverage, unless we spread the news around.
About 2 years ago, Obama had been sued in Georgia to produce his legitimate papers (long form birth certificate, etc.). The court approved this trial going forward, everyone got really excited, Obama’s attorney didn’t show up, then, at the last minute, the judge threw out the case & strongly chastised the attorney bringing the charges. The problem is I can’t remember the name of this judge. Then, several months later, the EPA gave approval for a nuclear power plant in Georgia, it’s first if I remember correctly. They usually aren’t as devious as this, but I can’t help but wonder if all this is connected.
not as easy as it sounds. costs to scrap the coal plant and retrofit to gas convert may not be affordable
and it needs to have a pipline terminus to bring the gas in.
With an estimated 280 billion tons the U.S. has the world’s largest known coal reserve. At the current burn rate this would last for 250 years. A prudent government would focus research on clean coal technology. Instead we fund exotic pipe dreams.
I’m hoping sooner . . .
Red states need to start passing laws forbidding power generated within the state to be transferred to blue states who refuse to build power plants.
Let the commies sit in the dark for a few days and they will get a new attitude about power ASAP.
That’s great..../s
bump
And to who?
One example: twice-weekly coal trains I see rumbling through my part of North Alabama... can't prove it, but I expect they go to north Georgia power plants.
Yup. 500 broken families broken now.
Imagine is some hurricane or national tragedy happened wiping out 500 families ?
The media and politicians would be all over tv.
But when its the Kenyan Communist Traitor - S$% be upon him - silence as always.
True, but he also said in 08: Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I'm capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it...
Hence he's shutting down clean natural gas plants too.

The story is a little different than the article he used as a source. I have done work at many of these plants. Some are outdated and inefficient. The epa is an ass, though.
I can't remember the last time our government was accused of being prudent.
[I can’t remember the last time our government was accused of being prudent.]
On that subject, the manufacturing sector of Western Europe used to build their power plants to burn both oil or coal, whichever was cheaper at the time. This had a regulating effect on both fuels.
Uh, we went for Romney, as a state. Just for the record.
Or poke a wolverine ...
"Son, you don't poke a wolverine with a sharp stick unless you want your balls ripped off." -- Grandpa Vanderboegh.
Devil went down to Georgia,
He was looking for some plants to close,
He was in a bind,
He was way behind...
But....but....but.....I just bought an electric car, where am I going to plug it in? Am I going to have to drive to Alabama, or South Carolina or Tennessee or Florida and find a working electrical socket?
A few years ago an 80 year old rancher here in Texas was being hassled time after time by some rookie deputy. Just didn't like the old man for whatever reason and would pull him over on the dirt roads leading out to his ranch.
One day that old rancher had enough of this punk and shot his ass right there on his ranch for trespassing.
Like you say, someone, somewhere will decide enough is enough.
“It seems that the ..alternative energy system in the very near future for the folks in our state of Georgia will be lots of flashlight batteries.”
Yes thats what we are afraid of. We are buying rural property and installing either solar or micro hydro as a non grid tie backup. All appliances on propane.
That’s the night that the lights went out in Georgia.

Obama EPA Regulations Kill 15 Power Plants, 480 Jobs In Georgia
. . . . Check out article, then # 16 , 18 , # 26 .
(Ripple effects across the Country, these aren’t jobs at flipping hamburgers...)
If it took Jimmy Carter to get us a Ronald Reagan, we should be getting another George Washington after this guy!!
(Ripple effects across the Country, these arent jobs at flipping hamburgers...)
.
Thanks for the ping.
Close them all now and let the Democrat aholes in Georgia suffer like the rest of us chaffing under Obama’s marxist regime.
That’s my theory of “redistributive suffering”. Or in plain English, “PAYBACK”.
Georgia went to Romney.
I can only imagine my electric bill in the summer when it is time to crank up the a/c. Damn.
Truth is give any democrap in power enough time and they will self destruct its just their nature.
Aside for the fact that many are now unemployed...what does this do to the electricity rates????
Electricity rates will necessarily spiral. Think big increases, not something insignificant.
Obama is NOT an enviro-weenie, he is someone who is working for THEM, not us. Obama is PLAYING a liberal part but he is doing these radical things to destroy the United States, not improve the country.
Think not just doubling but 10 x your present bill. When you try to keep your electric use down AND your bill is over $1000/month, then Obama will be doing the real destruction to the country that the Muslim Terrorist is wanting to do.
