Yes, I can imagine having three Oscar winners would be a bit of a plus!

I figured a sufficiently manly death would be either by shooting (hunting accident?) or by automobile...flipped a coin...

Well, Season 3 just concluded in the U.S on PBS.... comments anyone?

Is this thread still active?

Some stunning, heartbreaking deaths in Season 3... :-(

Season 4 being filmed now in the UK. I wish they'd run Season 4 in both the UK and the US at the same time, so spoilers wouldn't be all over the internet...

I was immensely disappointed with season 3, while I LOVED season 1 and 2. I’m re-watching it, and it’s slightly less depressing the second time through, but not much.

As an aside, my daughter and I counted deaths, and we came up with 11. Downton definitely keeps Grassby’s funeral home jumping. :p

I am so sad that Matthew (a MAIN character!) and Lady Sybil are gone. Just ridiculous...

I heard viewers in the UK share your views... Season 1 is still their favorite.

Hubby and I picked up with "Downton" in Season 2, although we learned most of the back story about Season 1. Now that Season 3 is over, we plan to watch Season 1 DVDs (yes, we know about Lady Mary's Turkish diplomat lover - hard to avoid that one in Season 2).

As an aside, my daughter and I counted deaths, and we came up with 11. Downton definitely keeps Grassby’s funeral home jumping. :p

Eleven... wow! Are you including characters who never appeared on-screen? (ie Lavinia's father who left Matthew his fortune... or maybe Mr. Swire appeared in Season 1?)

Yes, we counted them all, even the baby, but there were SIX bodies shown in three seasons. That is a bit much. LOL

Good ending. Not good in the fact that Matthew died, but good as cliffhangers go.

I didn’t enjoy Season 3 as much as the prior seasons. Maybe it’s just losing its novelty. There was a lot of PC stuff going on this season.

I’d like to see things spiced up more with some love triangles and/or forbidden/clandestine affairs. Also some new colorful mainstay characters are needed.

Might help to have the story line progress a bit faster. We got 9 months progression last night (Mary’s pregnancy). How about 9 years?

I know it means some of the characters will have to age and/or pass away, but I hope next season begins with the two grandchildren as pre-adolescents or teens to liven things up. The grown ups are getting too stodgy and predictable.

But it’s worth watching for the costumes alone-LOL.

I did not like that Matthew Crowly died. I think season 1 has been the best so far. Seems to me like the story lines are introduced and too abruptly finished. However, I thought last night’s episode was very good. Is it not on again until next January?

I don’t like the politically correct crap this season either. I loved Upstairs, Downstairs. It seemed to endure a little better. I have a feeling Downton is going to run out of steam soon. I’m I the only one that thinks Elizabeth McGovern is a terrible actress or is it just her character?

No, that's moving WAY too fast for me! I don't want to lose the wonderful Maggie Smith, and possibly Mr. Carson and Mrs. Hughes.

Writer Julian Fellowes claims he'll never "kill off" Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, per the Maggie Smith and Julian Fellowes interview I saw on "60 Minutes" last night (first time I've watched that show in many years).

I agree with you... McGovern sticks out like a sore thumb, compared to the other excellent actors. She is not even close to being in the same league as the British actors IMO...

I don't know when Downton will be back on, either in the UK or in the US. From what I've read, they are filming Season 4 now.

I really wish they would run Downton at the same time in the UK and the US so spoilers wouldn't be all over the media. Unfortunately I learned about the deaths of Lady Sybil and Matthew beforehand, even though I was trying to avoid any info about upcoming episodes.

I learned that Matthew's character had been "written out of the show at the end of Season 3" courtesy of a few FReepers who posted the spoilers about Matthew above on this thread in early January. I really wish I had not known about last night's tragic ending beforehand.

I heard it rumored that Mary's new baby will be an idiot (in the language of that day), possibly due to inbreeding.

It's always something . . .

McGovern is not up to the par of the others, that’s for sure.

She has a repertoire of exactly one expression - head slightly bowed, eyes rolled upward, mouth pursed.
