Posted on 01/06/2013 1:17:04 PM PST by Nachum
A concerted effort to unseat Speaker John A. Boehner was under way the day of his re-election to the position, but participants called it off 30 minutes before the House floor vote, CQ Roll Call has learned.
A group of disaffected conservatives had agreed to vote against the Ohio lawmaker if they could get at least 25 members to join the effort. But one member, whose identity could not be verified, rescinded his or her participation the morning of the vote, leaving the group one person short of its self-imposed 25-member threshold. Only 17 votes against Boehner were required to force a second ballot, but the group wanted to have insurance.
Even with 24 members, the group would easily have been able to force a second ballot round, but the effort was aborted in frenetic discussions on the House floor.
There was an effort to get to a particular number, said one Republican member who voted for Boehner but was familiar with the effort to oust him.

Do it, and be done with the lying fraud!
Not quite big enough, unfortunately.
I can’t think of a single “good” thing to say about Boehner. He has been an enabler for 0bama and probably the worst possible “Leader” for the GOP. In short, he’s a worthless POS!
We limit ourselves.
We have the power.
We can force the issue.
We don't need any more help than what we have on hand.
And we chicken out, because we just want to be a little more sure of ourselves.
So....they had 7 more than they needed but not 8 more so they cowered.
Maybe a millionbillionziooiontrillionquintillion would have been another good number. Or 4. Either way.
This reads as “We want to make sure we have enough cowards to cover the cowards we KNOW will back out in the vote. So we just cowered and avoised it all.
This whole story is a fairy tale. Hensarling is never, ever going to go against Boehner. He is chairman of the financial services committee. That is a money printing position worth many millions in campaign “donations”. No beltway type would do anything to jeopardize that winning lotto ticket.
Thinking about this, we just had a group of people even more moronic than Obama voters bitching about their reduced paychecks.
Yea....we can count on them.
They literally just admitted they had the votes to unseat Bhoner and did not. Remember that everyone, before EVER defending the GOP EVER AGAIN. Because you will be reminded.
...Yup .... it was so large that he got re-elected with only a few dissents! I be he is really shaking in his boots.
< / Sarcasm >
Like nearly all the Republican strategies... they DIE on the launching pad because there is NO LEADERSHIP or follow through.
Further proof that these guys are not up to the job of taking on the socialist thugs!
In other words: They didn’t have the guts to stand up for We the People.
I am DONE with the Republican party. I’ll vote (I) or not at all. The only thing they do with my vote is pretend to be on my side.
It's ALWAYS 'one'. Always.
U are full of it. Bonehead may have kept his job, but he made concessions
the night before the vote. Such as running the house in regular order,
instead of a dictatorship. And some other concessions.
But Code, you’ll be a traitor to your country and the problem and lotsa bad things if you don’t keep voting for people that do the opposite of what you want! Don’t you see? You HAVE to cut your own throat of half FR will haZ a tantrum !
i am now even more disappointed after reading about this... bunch of weenies... all of them! how exciting and promising had they gone through with it!
geez and Hiltler almost got to Moscow. Losing is losing. Dick Armey almost got Newt’s job, but now both are just fqt guys on TV. The folks that let the speaker survive in his job are like all the folks that almost reached the top. /rant off
I;m not surprised Nor will I be when another batch of idiots shows up with al all new batch of excuses for this latest abortion.. Disgusted but not surprised.
Big deal. They didn’t pull it off and that’s all that matters. that’s like saying, “we only lost by 1.” yeah, but you still lost.
Actually they won. They got exactly what they voted for. ‘We’ lost.
Again. Because why? No one would stand on principle.
Bad word, I know.
Roll Call and the Hill are two sources I take with a grain of salt.
Only 17 votes against Boehner were required to force a second ballot... with 24 members, the group would easily have been able to force a second ballot round, but the effort was aborted in frenetic discussions on the House floor.IOW, 24 RINOs backed down, but got the publicity they so desperately craved.
Talk to Jim about adding them to the prohibited list.
We can all kiss a National Right to Work law goodbye. Boehner has consistently fought against RTW.
Imagine the stupidity of the process...
“We need 17 and we might get that. So lets set an arbitrary number well above it we cant hit, then we have an excuse.”
Then they hit that arbitrary number...
“OK we need someone to back out so we have something to sell to the dipsticks. They believe everything we tell’em anyway.”
Way more than needed to do the job and STILL would not.
Let it sink in folks.
And as usual, their testicle shrunk right up into their abdomen when it came time to fight for our country.
And these would be the people to vote to send our kids to die for our country and they can’t even cast a damn vote.
We HAVE to vote GOP to keep the Dems from doing A) B) or C) and yet somehow, THAT NEVER HAPPENS!!!
Love ya FR, but surely you can see the frustration of most of us here. WE have the fight in us, but tired of fighting FOR those who DON’T!
Probably was Bachmann. Per a thread yesterday, she changed her vote at the last minute.
Regardless, those 25 can expect 2 years of retribution for their insurrection. They apparently bluffed and lost. Now, they have lost significantly more.
Per some threads, it was only going to take 17 to stop Boehner. If they had 25, even 24, they did themselves no favors by changing their minds.
He made the same promise the term before, why would he have to keep his word now, since clearly he has no principle values?
Lest we forget, we were told clearly and often on these very pages by fellow conservatives that principles and purity were bad.
And ‘purists’ were the problem.
CLEARLY, they did not have one so the public embarrassment would've only weakened an already weak Speakership and offered no gain.
For all the whining and moaning here and on the Hill about Boehner, there's no one who wants to step into that job. They're paper tigers. Sound and fury signifying nothing.
And fighting WITH those who don’t.
Hard to play ball when half the team suits up for the opposition.
Excuses. We need fewer.
Acceptance of reality. We need more.
Try that. Because I’m sure they would have voted for someone.
I guess I’ll just have to change my name from ‘Charlie Brown’. Lucy never will let me kick that football.
When voting reared it’s scary head,
Brave Republicans turned and fled..
Brave, brave, brave, brave Republicans.
Hat tip to Monty Python, Apologies to Sir Robin.
No, not quite big enough just yet. But, don’t be surprised if we see a serious third party moment rise up during the run up to the next election. It’s genesis will be the Tea Party, may be named something different but the TP will be its foundation. Yes, I know all the arguments against. But, I think many conservatives and even some independents have grown weary of the current GOP leadership. Just saying......
You’re in growing company. Thank God.
I would not have given him a second chance.
But I guess his promises were enough to prevent a floor fight.
this makes pretty good sense. i count about 15 or so true, tea party, conservatives in the house. there’s maybe 15 more hangers on who will sometimes stiffen their spines and vote with us, so the number 25 is a little lower than what one would expect if a revolt was going to be successful. i bet they wanted to get more than that.
i commend them for trying. that alone took courage. to even mount any kind of challenge to a sitting speaker would be pretty rare, i’m guessing. uh oh, i guess i’m going to be in the minority on this. better to damn them all as failures and sellouts.
When you think about it he did get 98% of the Bush tax cuts put into effect and now the rats are forced to agree that the Bush tax cuts, which they demonized for ten years, are really a pretty good thing.Kinda like no wmds in Syria allover again.
Try and remember we only hold one House of govt. and not the Presidency so let your expectations keep that in mind.
You have a point its a thankless job and when you have the House and no Senate and an illegal President who doesn’t have clue when he’s off prompter, no budget in 1,300 days, its that much tougher.
I say warts and all we are foolish if we don’t try to work with Boehner.
...because FR doesn't have near enough censorship...
Third party is a grand idea.(excuse me if I barf)
Why after a scant 20 years when they become viable we can even do a fourth party when the third party starts giving us only 60% of what you want instead of 100%. Grand idea! Anything else?
Too bad it didn’t succeed! The Republican Party has become a farce.
Sure. Lets keep praying to the Blue Fairy and every time we gather after they invariably do the wrong thing and bitch about it, the Blue fairy will send a phophet to tell us we need to keep doing that and some day real soon now, she’ll grant our wish.
THAT is a REALLY GOOD idea don’t’cha think?
Because it’s worked SPECTACULARLY well so far. For the GOP I mean. No for us so much but hey, as long as they haZ a happy that’s the important thing....
I was being sarcastic.
Who is that someone?
That’s old news, the now news is he had best stop anything that dopes anything but make it easier to get tuns.
Those bastards are responsible for the deaths of those 20 kids every bit as much as the guy or guys who pulled the triggers. If I am smart enough to know that making a place a gun free zone is an invitation to trouble, so are they, but they did it anyhow. We need to start holding them responsible for what they impose on us, especially when it cost the lives of 20 kids 5 and 6 years old.
