Christie, by his own admission, is "not a subtle personality" and he likes to take charge. Those two traits figured prominently in how the rising Republican handled Sandy.
From his frequent, televised updates to residents as the storm's winds whipped the state's beaches to his criticism last week of fellow Republican John Boehner's decision to delay a U.S. House vote on federal storm aid, his handling of his native state's worst natural disaster may one day be considered the defining moment in the political career of a budding presidential contender.
The timing of the storm _ days before a presidential election _ ultimately helped define his role in it as well.
Christie has been viewed as a nonpartisan advocate for federal aid since the storm hit Oct. 29. He embraced President Barack Obama's visit to the Jersey Shore six days before the election, inciting catcalls from conservatives.
And last week he smacked down Boehner for delaying a vote on the $60.4 billion storm aid package. Christie said he tried to call Boehner four times Tuesday, but none of the calls was returned. Christie's office received 800 emails in the hours following the governor's Boehner news conference, mostly positive.
Christie said he was just doing his job.

After pulling that Lewinski on Obama, Christie lost me completely.
For one, he doesn't pull his pants up far enough.
A new day, a new presser from Christie. Lemme guess, the fix is in for the RINO’s 2016 race. Another election, another lose. Further proof we haven’t had a two party system in years.
Let’s clarify this phone call bs by Christie. He called 4 times on a night they were dealing w the fiscal cliff.
After saying no calls returned for his headline, Christie says- Didn’t get a call back till the next morning.
F him. And “nonpartisan” is supporting Obama and denouncing republicans. Christie is 1000% about Christie, the storm relief has been pitiful.
Ya know in real life I don’t care if Christie is fat and it seems weird that folks here focus on that.
The fact that Christie seems to have lost his gift of straight shooting rhetoric bothers me. He has sunk to the low of a typical politician. He knew the Sandy bill was laden with pork but instead called out Boehner for not bringing it up for a vote rather than call out the congress to pass a clean bill.
Kissing up to Obama didn’t thrill me either, but how are conservatives going to vote for in NJ.
Your job is to whine for FedMob handouts like an 0bamaPhone Lady instead of digging in and directing the resources of your state, eh, Gubbenor?
Wow Boehner did not return Christie’s call, what a surprise! Maybe he should call Springsteen and they could both have a good cry about it. I guess nobody should be surprised about Christie, after all it is New Jersey.
Someone shoulf have told Christie that the pork in the bill was going to teachers unions. His reply might have been priceless.
